A fatal multi-vehicle crash disrupted eastbound traffic on Interstate 26 in Asheville, North Carolina, on October 22, 2026. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the collision near mile marker 36.5. This prompted an emergency road closure while authorities investigated and cleared the scene.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation initially closed the eastbound interstate at Exit 37 before changing the closure point to Exit 33, according to its traffic map. The disruption severely affected commuters and commercial traffic traveling through the Asheville area during the afternoon hours.

Timeline of the Incident and Detours

According to NCDOT records, the multi-vehicle incident began at 2:31 p.m. Due to the severity of the collision, transportation officials diverted motorists off the interstate at Exit 33 onto Brevard Road. Traffic was routed via I-26 West to I-40 East to Exit 50 at Hendersonville Road to help bypass the blocked stretch of highway.

Authorities anticipated that the interstate would remain closed for an extended period as troopers conducted their on-site investigation. However, emergency crews worked efficiently to process the site. NCDOT issued an update at 4:27 p.m. stating that the eastbound closure at Exit 33 had been fully cleared and traffic was moving once again.

Ongoing Investigation by State Troopers

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol managed the active crash scene alongside other emergency responders. As of the initial clearance of the roadway, officials have not released specific details regarding the identities of the individuals involved, the exact number of vehicles caught in the pileup, or the precise sequence of events that led to the fatal collision.

NCSHP indicated that additional information regarding the crash will be released to the public once troopers finalize their preliminary on-site investigation reports.
