More than thirty-five years after its initial premiere, Aaron Sorkin’s breakout courtroom drama A Few Good Men has officially returned to Broadway. Lincoln Center Theater’s high-profile revival began preview performances on October 8, 2026, at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in New York City, with an official opening night scheduled for October 29. Directed by six-time Tony Award winner Michael Arden, the 13-week limited engagement runs through January 10, 2027.
The production marks a significant reunion for Sorkin and Emmy Award winner Bradley Whitford, whose decades-long creative partnership began with the original 1989 Broadway staging of the play and continued on television with The West Wing. Whitford steps into the role of the formidable Col. Nathan R. Jessep-portrayed famously by Jack Nicholson in the 1992 film adaptation-while breakout film star Tom Blyth makes his Broadway debut as military lawyer Lt. J.G. Daniel A. Kaffee. The core principal cast also features Krysta Rodriguez as Lt. Commander JoAnne Galloway and Michael Oberholtzer as Capt. Jack Ross.
Revisiting a Breakout Script With Fresh Eyes
For Sorkin, bringing the script back to the stage offered an unexpected opportunity to look at his artistic roots. In interviews surrounding the revival, the playwright noted that viewing the original text felt akin to looking at a high-school yearbook photo. Rather than leaving the text untouched, Sorkin provided the production with a dialogue polish, treating the staging as if it were an entirely new work during rehearsals and previews.
“The reason why I grabbed at this one was Lincoln Center and the Vivian Beaumont Theater,” Sorkin explained. He pointed to Michael Arden’s dynamic direction, the chance to work alongside Whitford once more, and the sudden contemporary resonance of the text as key motivators. Themes involving illegal orders, military accountability, and institutional obedience have cycled back into public conversation, giving the courtroom classic a renewed sense of urgency.
A Star-Studded Creative and Performance Team
The stellar cast features seasoned stage and screen talents alongside Blyth, Whitford, and Rodriguez. The ensemble includes Nick Blaemire as LTJG Sam Weinberg, Michael Braugher as Cpl. Jeffrey Howard, Christopher Gurr as CDR Walter Stone, Billy Eugene Jones as CAPT Isaac Whitaker, Collin Kelly-Sordelet as PFC Louden Downey, Lavel Schley as LCpl. Harold W. Dawson, Thom Sesma as Maj. Matthew Markinson, and Daniel Velez as PFC William T. Santiago.
Helmed by Lincoln Center Theater Artistic Director Lear deBessonet and Executive Producer Bartlett Sher, the creative team features scenic design by Dane Laffrey, costume design by Alejo Vietti, lighting design by Japhy Weideman, and sound design by Joshua Reid.
Theatrical Roots vs. Cinematic Legacy
While the 1992 film adaptation directed by Rob Reiner and starring Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson remains a pop-culture touchstone, Sorkin has consistently emphasized that A Few Good Men was fundamentally designed as a live theatrical experience. Designed to draw audiences immediately into high-stakes moral dilemmas, the revival aims to make theatergoers active participants rather than passive spectators as Kaffee uncovers a deadly conspiracy within the chain of command.
Performances for the strictly limited 13-week run continue at the Vivian Beaumont Theater through January 2027, anchoring a major fall theater season at Lincoln Center.
