Viewers of the Today show experienced a morning surprise when longtime NBC meteorologist Al Roker made a sudden departure mid-broadcast. Roker left the studio early to fulfill an important civic obligation, stepping away to report for jury duty.
During the early morning segment, Roker delivered the initial weather forecast as usual. However, as the broadcast progressed, co-anchor Savannah Guthrie addressed the sudden roster change live on air. Guthrie informed viewers, “We have Dylan taking over for Al, who had to leave a little bit early.” Meteorologist Dylan Dreyer, who seamlessly stepped into the role, added with a smile, “Yeah, a little switcheroo again this morning.”
Co-Hosts Reassure Viewers About Roker’s Absence
As the morning news program transitioned into its third hour, Roker remained absent from the set. Co-host Craig Melvin took a moment to update the audience and ease any concerns regarding the beloved weatherman’s sudden disappearance.
“Al had to step out for just a little bit,” Melvin reassured viewers at the top of the third-hour broadcast, confirming to the audience that he would return to the anchor desk the following day.
Al Roker Explains His Absence on Instagram
While initial on-air updates kept details minimal, Roker quickly cleared up the mystery himself. Taking to social media, the 71-year-old television personality shared an update from outside a courthouse in New York City.
“Got out of the Today show early,” Roker said in an Instagram video recorded outside the grand, columned building, “because I’ve got jury duty.”
True to his signature humor, Roker could not resist a lighthearted quip about his unexpected legal assignment. “It’s everybody’s civic duty to do your duty,” he added in the video, before laughing and playfully noting, “He said ‘dooty’ twice!” He also captioned the post, “Hey now!!! All rise!! Time for jury duty.”
A Busy Morning Routine Before Court
Roker’s unexpected trip to the courthouse came after an already active start to his day. Before arriving at Rockefeller Center for the 7 a.m. broadcast, the resilient weather anchor completed an early-morning workout session. He shared footage with his followers showing him walking on a treadmill, lifting weights, and working on his balance.
“Good morning, family. Let’s get the week started off right,” Roker wrote in his fitness post, reminding his audience of his ongoing personal motto, “Remember, something is better than nothing. Let’s check the box.”
Following his brief civic interruption, Roker is scheduled to return to his regular forecasting and co-hosting duties on the Today show.
