Filipina tennis star Alex Eala moved one step closer to securing a coveted gold medal and an automatic berth at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics after advancing to the women’s singles semifinals at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. The 21-year-old world No. 18 secured her spot in the final four on Wednesday following a hard-fought 7-5, 6-0 victory over Taiwan’s Joanna Garland at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center.

Eala’s quarterfinal match began as a tense, back-and-forth battle. Both players held serve through the opening games until a crucial break in the 11th game allowed Eala to edge ahead 6-5 and subsequently seal the opening set. Finding her rhythm in the second set, the left-hander dominated the court, blanking Garland and finishing the match with 77 total points-23 more than her opponent-while converting seven of her 15 break-point opportunities.

Chasing Gold and an Olympic Dream

Following her victory, Eala expressed her deep commitment to representing her home country on international stages. Having previously claimed double bronze medals in both singles and mixed doubles alongside Francis Alcantara at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, she enters the final stages of the Nagoya tournament as a primary favorite for the gold.

“Representing my country and playing these types of games, SEA Games, Asian Games and hopefully the Olympics, they’re very close to my heart and a big part of my dream,” Eala said after her quarterfinal win. “The Olympics is a dream for me to be able to compete there, to represent my country. So, yeah, let’s see how it goes.”

With tennis gold medalists at the Asian Games earning direct qualification to the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the stakes remain exceptionally high for the young Filipino athlete.

Upcoming Semifinal Matchup and WTA Tour Scheduling Conflicts

Eala will next face China’s Wang Xiyu in the semifinals, with the winner advancing directly to Friday’s gold medal match. Wang advanced following a three-set victory over local player Moyuka Uchijima.

To participate in the prestigious continental multi-sport event, Eala made the strategic decision to withdraw from the concurrent WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing. This scheduling clash could potentially subject her to a $10,000 fine from the Women’s Tennis Association due to the tournament’s mandatory participation rules. However, Eala noted that she has not yet received any official notice from the governing body regarding potential penalties, and her focus remains firmly on her matches in Japan.

Other professional players have weighed in on the difficult calendar overlapping. Chinese veteran Zhang Shuai noted the extreme challenges players face when major international multi-sport events and top-tier tour events fall during the exact same weeks, forcing competitors to weigh national representation against professional tour commitments.

With her path clear to the final rounds, Eala stands just two wins away from cementing her tennis legacy in Asia and securing her early ticket to Los Angeles.
