Algeria has significantly upgraded its air defense network by procuring the Chinese HQ-17 short-range air defense system. The deployment is designed to defend against low-flying aircraft and cruise missile threats, according to multiple defense sources.
The HQ-17 is a Chinese adaptation of Russia’s Tor-M1 system. It integrates surveillance, tracking, and fire-control radar on a single mobile vehicle, enabling independent operations without external radar support, as reported by Military Watch Magazine.
This mobile system uses a wheeled chassis and can travel at speeds up to 90 kilometers per hour. It can engage up to four targets simultaneously at ranges up to 20 kilometers and altitudes of 10 kilometers.
Each launcher carries eight missiles that reach speeds of approximately Mach 3. This gives Algeria a robust tactical defense capability against modern aerial threats.
