Chelsy Davy has opened up about how her perspective on marriage, family, and long-term commitment transformed following her high-profile relationship with Prince Harry. The entrepreneur and jewellery designer, who dated the Duke of Suss*x on and off from 2004 to 2011, shared candid reflections on her Aya Jewels website while marking the 10th anniversary of launching her business.
Reflecting on her twenties and early thirties, the 40-year-old admitted that settling down was far from her mind during her globe-trotting years. Instead of pursuing traditional domestic milestones, she focused heavily on personal freedom, travel, and adventure across locations including Istanbul, South America, Bali, and Moscow.
“Looking back… commitment wasn’t exactly my strong suit,” Chelsy wrote in her blog essay. “If I’m completely honest, the only thing I was committed to was having fun. I wanted the next trip, the next adventure, the next group of people I hadn’t met yet.”
How Meeting Sam Cutmore-Scott Shifted Her Outlook
Chelsy explained that marriage and motherhood had never been high on her to-do list because they represented permanence and responsibility-elements she had actively avoided. However, her perspective changed dramatically after the COVID-19 pandemic when she met hotelier Sam Cutmore-Scott in 2020 at the age of 35.
“It wasn’t that I suddenly developed some great romantic vision of settling down. It was much more instinctive than that. I met Sam and, for the first time, I knew I wanted a family, specifically with him,” she shared, adding that timing and biology also played a natural role in her shift toward starting a family.
The couple married in a private ceremony in Mauritius in 2022 and now share three children: Leo, four, Chloe, three, and six-month-old Finn. The family has since established their life in Mauritius, where Chelsy balances running her jewellery brand with motherhood.
Reflecting on the Prince Harry Years and Media Scrutiny
Before finding stability with Cutmore-Scott, Chelsy’s early adult years were heavily shaped by her romance with Prince Harry. The couple began dating in 2004 after meeting in Cape Town, but their relationship endured severe public pressure and intense media attention.
Reflecting on that era in past interviews, Chelsy described the continuous spotlight as overwhelming. “I found it very difficult when it was bad. I couldn’t cope. I was young, I was trying to be a normal kid and it was horrible,” she noted in 2016.
Despite their ultimate split in 2011, the former couple remained on amicable terms. Chelsy was among the notable guests who attended Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, in 2018.
Embracing the Realities of Modern Motherhood
Looking at her life today, Chelsy expressed immense gratitude for both her past adventures and her current reality. While acknowledging that parenting three small children has entirely restricted her spontaneity and brought unexpected anxiety-including a frightening episode when youngest son Finn contracted meningitis at two weeks old-she remains completely devoted to family life.
“I sometimes say my children saved me from myself,” she reflected. “I had an extraordinary amount of fun. But realistically, there was probably a limit to how long I could have continued on that trajectory. I loved that life, and I’m very glad I had it. I just wouldn’t swap this one for it.”
