Chet Hanks and comedian Eric André reignited their long-standing public dispute over the weekend after crossing paths at ComplexCon in Los Angeles. The unexpected encounter at the Los Angeles Convention Center brought their years-old feud back into the spotlight, leading to a heated exchange that required security intervention.
The confrontation, captured on video and later shared by Hanks on Instagram, shows the actor and musician approaching André from behind and placing a hand on his shoulder. While the interaction initially appeared casual, tensions quickly mounted as the two men spoke face-to-face. Security personnel swiftly moved between them to separate the pair as the discussion escalated.
The Roots of the Feud: The Eric André Show
The animosity between Hanks and André dates back to March 2023, following Hanks’ appearance on the sixth season of Adult Swim’s satirical comedy series, The Eric André Show. Shortly after filming, André criticized Hanks’ behavior during an interview with Rolling Stone. He described Hanks as “emotionally disturbed” and accused him of nearly injuring crew members by riding a motorcycle around the production set.
Hanks strongly refuted those claims through a series of social media posts at the time. He explained that he was simply trying to match the unpredictable, outlandish energy of the satirical program. According to Hanks, a dirt bike was brought onto the set, and he opted to ride it because he knew how. He argued that his actions were misinterpreted and that André was upset because he felt “outshined” on his own show.
The disagreement quickly escalated online. André fired back on social media and jokingly challenged Hanks to provide a DNA test to prove his lineage to Hollywood icon Tom Hanks. André later reiterated his frustration in interviews, keeping the tension alive.
What Happened at ComplexCon?
According to Hanks’ account shared on Instagram following the weekend event, André initially showed no recollection of their previous public clashes. Hanks wrote that André traveled through the convention with multiple security guards before the conversation turned to past grievances, specifically mentioning Hanks’ controversial past use of a Jamaican Patois accent.
“Finally ran into @ericf**kingandre, who apparently travels to ComplexCon with 4 security guards… and who had NO MEMORY WHATSOEVER of trashing me to the media after I outshined him on his own show!!” Hanks wrote in his caption.
As security stepped in to defuse the situation, André parted ways with a remark referencing Hanks’ father. Representatives for Eric André have not yet released an official statement regarding the weekend confrontation.
