Collin Gosselin, a former child star of the hit TLC reality series Jon & Kate Plus 8, has accused his mother, Kate Gosselin, of severe mistreatment and isolation during his childhood. Ahead of the release of his forthcoming memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, scheduled for October 13, 2026, the 22-year-old has opened up about his experiences growing up in the public eye and what he alleges transpired away from television cameras.
Detailed Claims Leading Up to Memoir Release
In a series of interviews and social media posts, Collin detailed disturbing accounts from his youth following his parents’ high-profile divorce in 2009. Speaking with ABC News correspondent Juju Chang, Collin asserted that his televised upbringing did not reflect reality. "Simply put, my whole life that I lived was a lie," he stated. "All the things you see on TV, lies."
Among the most serious allegations, Collin claimed that after his parents split up, his mother isolated him from his father, Jon Gosselin, and subjected him to extreme confinement. He alleged that after running away, his hands and feet were zip-tied together and he was locked in a basement room. Collin also shared claims on Instagram Stories regarding a diary entry allegedly written by his mother when he was a toddler, stating that she had to pray to stop herself from hitting him at age two.
Institutionalization and Family Fractures
The friction reached a critical point in 2016 when Kate Gosselin sent Collin, then 11 years old, to a behavioral health institution, citing what she described at the time as unpredictable and violent behavior. Kate stated during a 2016 ABC News interview that her decision was "the best thing I can do for him right now" and dismissed abuse reports as unfounded.
Collin remained in the facility for about a year before smuggling out a handwritten note to his father. Following a lengthy legal battle, Jon Gosselin was awarded custody of Collin in 2018. Today, Collin and his sister Hannah live with their father, while their six other siblings-Madelyn, Cara, Alexis, Aaden, Leah, and Joel-have remained estranged and aligned with Kate.
Public and Legal Context
The upcoming memoir has reignited national discussions concerning child labor laws, privacy, and the psychological impact of unscripted reality television on minors. Unlike child actors in scripted programs who are protected by provisions like the Coogan Law, reality TV children historically operated in a regulatory gray area during the height of the Gosselin family’s fame.
Kate Gosselin has consistently denied all allegations of abuse, attributing them to what she has characterized as Collin’s distorted perception of reality and past psychiatric diagnoses. While legal avenues remain complicated due to public figure standards, Collin maintains that his objective in writing In the Shadow of Eight is to encourage advocacy and transparency regarding child exploitation and abuse.
