Former reality television star Collin Gosselin, widely recognized from TLC’s long-running series Jon & Kate Plus 8, has leveled serious accusations of childhood mistreatment against his mother, Kate Gosselin. In an interview with ABC News correspondent Juju Chang, Collin spoke candidly about his upcoming memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, which is scheduled for release on October 13.
During the interview, Collin detailed what he alleges occurred away from television cameras following his parents’ high-profile 2009 divorce. “Simply put, my whole life that I lived was a lie,” Collin said. “All the things you see on TV, lies.”
Allegations of Isolation and Institutionalization
According to the memoir and interview statements, Collin alleges that after his parents split up, his mother isolated him from his father, Jon Gosselin, and forced him to sleep in a locked basement room. He claimed the mistreatment escalated to a point where a school teacher noticed a swollen earlobe, an injury Collin attributes to being dragged across a room.
Collin stated that after reporting the incident to a school guidance counselor, he was pulled out of fourth grade by his mother. Shortly before his 12th birthday, Kate Gosselin had him removed from the home and placed in a behavioral health institution. During his time at the facility, Collin claims he received heavy medication and experienced almost no family contact.
“I was told, ‘This is for your own good,’” Collin told ABC News. “I threatened my mom’s income, I threatened her image, and people will do anything to protect their reputation, especially my mom.”
In 2016, Kate Gosselin defended her decision to place Collin in a facility, telling ABC News that it was done to treat his educational and social challenges and calling reports of abuse “unfounded.”
The Road to Release and Family Estrangement
Collin spent approximately a year in the institution before managing to send a hidden crayon-scratched note to his father pleading for rescue. Two years later, following court intervention by Jon Gosselin, Collin moved in with his father and sister Hannah, who had also chosen to leave Kate’s care. Today, Collin is a college student studying finance.
The memoir’s cover features a 2010 photograph of Kate Gosselin with her hand clamped over a young Collin’s mouth. Promotional materials describe the book as a reckoning with the systems and institutions that allowed him to remain isolated during his youth. Collin has emphasized that the publication is intended as a call to action against child exploitation rather than mere entertainment.
Responses and Public Reaction
Kate Gosselin has consistently denied all allegations of abuse, attributing Collin’s claims to a distorted perception of reality resulting from mental health challenges. Representatives for TLC and Kate Gosselin have largely declined to comment on the new allegations, and Jon Gosselin declined an interview request for the initial broadcast.
The upcoming release of In the Shadow of Eight has renewed public debate regarding the ethics, legal protections, and oversight surrounding children featured on reality television. While Collin remains estranged from his mother and his six other siblings-Madelyn, Cara, Alexis, Aaden, Leah, and Joel-he expressed a lingering hope for reconciliation, stating directly to his siblings, “No matter what’s happened or what was said, no matter how things look from the outside, I love you, I always have and always will.”
