Columbus Marathon 2026: Road Closures & COTA Transit Delays

October 17, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

Drivers and public transit riders in Columbus, Ohio, face widespread travel disruptions during the October 16-18 weekend. Races, concerts, and a major hockey game will draw large crowds downtown. Event organizers anticipate more than 100,000 attendees across multiple weekend events, triggering extensive road restrictions and bus reroutes throughout several neighborhoods.

According to event organizers, road closures began on Friday, October 16, at 9:00 a.m. and remain in effect until Sunday, October 18, at 6:00 p.m. The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) has announced significant service changes affecting numerous bus routes, with delays and detours stretching from downtown to surrounding communities.

Marathon Schedule and Key Events

The flagship Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, October 18. The main marathon and half marathon events kick off at 7:30 a.m. at North Bank Park, located at 311 W. Long St. Competitors in the wheelchair division start slightly earlier at 7:25 a.m., while race corrals open to participants at 6:00 a.m. According to reports from The Columbus Dispatch, organizers expect over 15,000 runners to cross the starting line for the marathon and half marathon.

In addition to Sunday’s races, downtown Columbus hosts the Jesse Owens 5K on Saturday, October 17. These events, combined with local entertainment and athletic fixtures, bring heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic to the area.

COTA Transit Disruptions and Reroutes

Public transit users will experience substantial modifications to regular schedules and routing:

  • Saturday, Oct. 17: COTA routes are rerouted downtown to accommodate the Jesse Owens 5K. These detours begin at 9:00 a.m. and run until approximately noon.
  • Sunday, Oct. 18: Approximately 18 COTA transit lines are altered throughout the morning and early afternoon hours.
  • Stop Closures: Nearly all downtown transit stops close beginning at 5:00 a.m. on Sunday. More than 800 transit stops are temporarily unavailable across Downtown Columbus, German Village, Bexley, North Bank, Arena District, Short North, Victorian Village, the Ohio State University campus, Grandview Heights, and Upper Arlington.

To help navigate the disruptions, temporary downtown transit transfer points are established at Spring and Long Streets near the intersection of Fourth Street. Additional COTA Street Supervisors are on duty throughout the marathon to assist passengers. All regular transit reroutes are expected to conclude by mid-afternoon on Sunday. Riders are encouraged to check the official COTA website for real-time updates and specific route modifications.

Tips for Navigating Columbus During Marathon Weekend

With massive crowds and widespread infrastructure adjustments expected, residents and visitors traveling through the city should prepare ahead of time. Consider the following recommendations to minimize travel delays:

  • Plan Ahead: Allow extra travel time for any trips heading into or through downtown Columbus and adjacent neighborhoods.
  • Use Real-Time Apps: Monitor traffic applications and transit trackers for live updates on road reopenings and bus adjustments.
  • Avoid Non-Essential Driving: If you do not need to drive through the affected zones, consider delaying trips or utilizing alternative transit corridors outside the impact areas.
