Matt Dinniman’s self-published phenomenon, Dungeon Crawler Carl, is officially coming to the screen. Peacock has ordered a live-action series based on the hit LitRPG books, adapting its unique blend of horror, dark comedy, sci-fi world-building, and systemic critique for television.

The story follows Carl, a Seattle boat repairman, and Princess Donut, his ex-girlfriend’s prize-winning Persian cat. After an alien invasion destroys Earth, the survivors are forced into an eighteen-level subterranean dungeon. This competition is broadcast across the universe as a sadistic reality game show, where contestants must slay monsters, secure sponsors, and level up to survive.

The Creative Team

The adaptation features a strong creative team experienced in genre narratives. Chris Yost, known for his work on Thor: Ragnarok and The Mandalorian, serves as writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner alongside Eric Heisserer.

The project is produced by Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door Productions and Universal Television. Fuzzy Door has established a reputation for ambitious visual effects and sci-fi world-building through projects like The Orville. Author Matt Dinniman is also serving as a co-executive producer to ensure the adaptation remains faithful to his work.

At San Diego Comic-Con, it was confirmed that Jeff Hays-the voice actor behind the popular Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks-will voice Princess Donut. Since the audiobooks have been a primary driver of the franchise’s success, Hays’ involvement is a significant win for longtime fans.

The LitRPG Genre

Dungeon Crawler Carl serves as a high-profile entry point into the LitRPG (Literary Role-Playing Game) genre. LitRPG combines traditional fiction with explicit game mechanics, such as experience points, inventory systems, numerical stats, and achievement notifications.

In this universe, these mechanics are part of a twisted corporate game show. After eating a magical treat on the first floor, Princess Donut gains the ability to speak and access powerful spellcasting stats. She quickly becomes a central figure in the narrative, complementing Carl’s focus on unarmed combat and explosives.

Franchise Growth

The television adaptation arrives as the book series reaches new milestones. There are currently eight published books, with the eighth installment, A Parade of Horribles, released in May 2026. The author plans to conclude the series at ten books. The franchise has evolved from a niche favorite into a mainstream success, known for balancing absurd humor with emotional depth and social commentary.

While Peacock has not yet announced a premiere date, production is underway. The series is one of the most anticipated experiments in modern television, as it attempts to translate the chaotic atmosphere and heavy CGI requirements of the books into a live-action format.
