Durham Constabulary has launched an active investigation following a violent burglary in which an 82-year-old disabled woman fended off a balaclava-clad gang who attacked her with an axe inside her bungalow.
The harrowing incident unfolded shortly after 1:25 a.m. on Coast View in Blackhall Colliery. According to police reports and family statements, the elderly victim heard tapping on her window during the early morning hours. When she attempted to secure her front door with a chain, the intruders forced their way inside.
The victim’s grandson, Kieran Townley, described the terrifying ordeal to local reporters. “Masked lads armed with an axe and knives have burst into my nana’s home, attacked her, hit her over the head with an axe, and pinched all of her gold off her hands and arms,” he said.
Violent Struggle and Neighborhood Intervention
Once inside, the attackers struck the woman, demanded money, and violently tore jewelry directly from her arms and hands while she attempted to protect herself. The brutal assault ultimately came to an end when a neighboring resident heard the commotion and intervened.
The sudden presence of the neighbor startled the intruders, forcing the suspects to flee the scene on foot before emergency responders could arrive. Paramedics transported the injured woman to a hospital, where she received treatment for a concussion and extensive bruising, alongside specialist ongoing support.
