A prison escapee was sentenced to three years and six months in prison after ramming into armed officers outside a Coventry gym while attempting to flee arrest, West Midlands Police confirmed.

Authorities located 33-year-old fugitive Jay Bennett on Santos Close on March 24. Bennett attempted to smash his vehicle into officers and their squad cars. Responding personnel quickly intervened, smashing his driver’s side window to detain him safely without any reported injuries.

Bennett, who was of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to absconding from prison and three counts of driving while disqualified during his appearance at Warwick Crown Court. Additionally, jurors convicted him of dangerous driving, three counts of criminal damage, and two counts of attempted escape from custody prior to his sentencing last Monday.

Police Release Body-Worn Camera Footage

Following the court’s verdict, West Midlands Police released dramatic body-worn footage showing the tense moments of the arrest outside the Coventry fitness center. The video highlights the swift actions taken by firearms officers to neutralize the threat and prevent further harm as Bennett tried to smash his way through police blockades.

“A driver has been jailed after he rammed into our firearms officers in Coventry,” stated West Midlands Police representatives following the conclusion of the legal proceedings.

The Charges and Legal Consequences

The severity of Bennett’s sentencing reflects the multiple offenses committed during his time on the run. Absconding from lawful custody carries significant legal penalties. These penalties were compounded in this case by dangerous driving maneuvers directed specifically at law enforcement personnel and public property.

  • Absconding from Prison: Unlawfully leaving a correctional facility or failing to return.
  • Dangerous Driving: Operating a motor vehicle in a manner dangerous to the public and police.
  • Criminal Damage: Causing intentional harm to police squad cars during the ramming attempt.
  • Driving While Disqualified: Operating a vehicle despite a prior active court-ordered driving ban.

Law enforcement agencies across the region continue to emphasize zero tolerance for individuals who endanger public safety and attempt to violently evade lawful capture.
