An escaped prisoner who rammed armed police officers during a high-stakes escape attempt in Coventry has been sentenced to three and a half years behind bars. Jay Bennett, 33, appeared at Warwick Crown Court on September 28. He received his sentence following a dramatic daytime confrontation earlier in the year.
The incident took place on March 24 outside the Fitness Factory gym in Coventry. Bennett had been on the run for four months after absconding from HMP Sudbury in Derbyshire last December. Law enforcement spotted him while he was driving a black Volkswagen Golf. Having served only seven months of an original nine-year prison sentence, Bennett attempted a violent evasion.
CCTV and dramatic bodycam footage captured the chaotic scene as black-clad armed officers converged on the vehicle. Refusing to surrender, Bennett revved his engine. He aggressively smashed into several parked cars surrounding the gym in a desperate bid to break free.
To stop the escalating threat, armed officers discharged their firearms. They shot out the tyres of the Volkswagen Golf to immobilize the vehicle. Despite the punctured tyres, Bennett continued to maneuver dangerously. Finally, a police vehicle rammed his battered car into a wall, boxing him in.
Firearms officers then swarmed the vehicle, hauled Bennett out, and placed him under arrest. Official records and police statements confirmed that no officers or bystanders sustained injuries during the collisions or the high-intensity arrest.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Bennett, who gave no fixed address, faced a total of 18 charges stemming from the manhunt and the violent confrontation. During court proceedings, he formally admitted to absconding from lawful custody and three counts of driving while disqualified.
Additionally, he was found guilty of:
- Dangerous driving
- Three counts of criminal damage
- Two counts of attempting to escape from custody
The combination of his prison escape, the extensive property damage, and the dangerous tactics employed against firearm officers culminated in his three-and-a-half-year prison sentence handed down at Warwick Crown Court.
