A fatal evening attack in San Juan Capistrano, California, has left three young children without their father as local law enforcement continues an active homicide investigation. Valentin Onofre Martinez, a 31-year-old dedicated father and Home Depot employee, was killed on October 7 after stepping out to buy snacks and drinks for his children who were waiting at a nearby park.

Details of the San Juan Capistrano Stabbing

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to the neighborhood near Calle Santa Barbara and Los Rios Street at approximately 8:10 p.m. on October 7. Witnesses reported seeing a man lying on the ground suffering from multiple stab wounds.

Emergency responders arrived and rushed Martinez to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. While investigators detained several individuals at the location that night, authorities have not yet announced any official arrests, publicly identified a suspect, or established a concrete motive for the crime.

Family Remembers a Devoted, Hardworking Father

The victim’s fiancée, Mia Martinez, spoke out about the immense grief and shock her family is facing. She described Valentin as an involved father who centered his life around his three children, aged 3, 5, and 7.

“A father that was there every day of his kids’ life. He never missed a day. He took them to school, picked them up, went to work. He worked at Home Depot nights and still got up to take his kids to school,” Mia shared during an interview with local reporters.

Mia recounted hearing emergency sirens and receiving the phone call that compelled her to rush to the neighborhood. Upon arrival, she found the area sealed off with police caution tape. She now faces the painful reality of explaining the loss to their young children.

“They just keep asking for their dad. When is daddy coming back? And I just have to keep telling them that he’s not coming back,” she said.

Pushing Back Against Speculation

Investigators assigned the case to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Homicide and Gang Enforcement Team. However, Mia firmly pushed back against any preliminary speculation or attempts to frame the incident as gang-related.

“They’re trying to paint this as something that it’s not, which is gang-related. And if it is then it’s only on one side and it’s not his side,” Mia stated, emphasizing that Valentin had no affiliations with gangs and believes he was caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Valentin’s mother also remembered her son as a caring and industrious man, writing in an online fundraiser that he took extraordinary care of his family.

Community Support and Ongoing Investigation

As the Orange County Sheriff’s Department continues its search for answers, officials have noted they do not believe there is an active threat to the general public. Investigators are urging anyone who may have witnessed sus**cious activity or who holds information regarding the fatal incident to contact the O.C. Sheriff’s Department.

To assist with financial pressures and final arrangements, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to support the grieving family through this difficult period.
