Drivers traveling through Miami will encounter scheduled highway closures, lane restrictions, and detours over the weekend due to ongoing construction on the I-395/SR 836/I-95 Design-Build Project. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announced that this infrastructure work will impact key connecting routes, including eastbound State Road 836 and westbound Interstate 395, along with temporary operational changes for marine traffic on local drawbridges.
State Road 836 and Interstate 395 Closure Details
According to FDOT, all eastbound travel lanes on SR 836 at Northwest 17th Avenue will shut down starting at 11 p.m. Saturday and remain closed until 10 a.m. Sunday. Ahead of this full shutdown, two travel lanes between Northwest 17th Avenue and I-95 will close earlier on Saturday, starting at 10 p.m.
Additionally, westbound I-395 travel lanes merging onto westbound SR 836 will experience a full closure at I-95 on Saturday night between 11:59 p.m. and 7 a.m. Despite this mainline restriction, the exit ramps from I-395 leading to both northbound and southbound I-95 will remain open to motorists.
Recommended Detours for Affected Drivers
To help navigate the construction zone, FDOT has outlined specific detour routes for motorists traveling through the area:
- Eastbound SR 836 Detour: Exit at Northwest 17th Avenue, proceed south across Northwest Seventh Street, and turn left onto Southwest First Street heading east. From there, turn right onto South Miami Avenue and take the right turn ramp to access northbound or southbound I-95.
- Biscayne Boulevard and MacArthur Causeway Access: Drivers heading toward Biscayne Boulevard and the MacArthur Causeway can continue east along Southwest First Street, making a left turn onto Biscayne Boulevard to connect with the MacArthur Causeway entrance ramp at Northeast 11th Terrace.
- Northwest 12th Avenue Traffic: Motorists on Northwest 12th Avenue attempting to reach eastbound SR 836, I-95, Biscayne Boulevard, or the MacArthur Causeway must continue south on Northwest 12th Avenue, turn left onto Southwest First Street, and follow the standard detours.
- Westbound I-395 Detour: Drivers traveling westbound on I-395 should access the southbound I-95 ramp, exit at Southwest Seventh Street/Brickell Avenue (Exit 1B), turn left onto Southwest Eighth Street, enter the northbound I-95 ramp, and take the exit for westbound SR 836.
Marine Traffic and Drawbridge Adjustments
Marine traffic along the Miami River will also experience temporary disruptions. FDOT has authorized a temporary deviation from standard bridge operations for the Southwest First Street Bridge (Mile 0.9) and the West Flagler Street Bridge (Mile 1.0).
On Sunday morning between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., both drawbridges will open strictly on the hour and half-hour. Outside of this designated four-hour window, the bridges will resume their normal operating schedules. State transportation officials advise that all closure schedules and traffic shifts remain subject to change due to inclement weather or unforeseen field conditions.
