A major fire and serious incident at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta has left military personnel dead and injured. The event triggered a massive emergency response and a multi-agency police investigation. Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed the casualties on Saturday, while strong winds drove flames from the training facility into surrounding rural areas.
Emergency crews worked intensely to contain the blaze, and hospitals across the region prepared for an influx of patients. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) stated that officers were dispatched shortly after 4 p.m. local time on Saturday. The dispatch followed reports of an active fire within a training area at the base, which is situated about 180 kilometers (110 miles) southeast of Edmonton.
Hospitals Overwhelmed as Disaster Protocol Activates
Medical facilities near the military installation quickly became overwhelmed by the volume of people requiring urgent medical attention. Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency department physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, described the situation to national broadcasters as a severe crisis.
This number of patients would overwhelm the city of Edmonton and that is why we are clearing our decks and mobilizing to respond as if it was our own city. It is more patients than any of us want to count right now. It’s a disaster. It’s a one in every 15 to 25-year disaster.
Hospitals in Edmonton activated a “code orange” disaster response protocol. Ambulances, local fire departments, and STARS air ambulance services mobilized aircraft from Edmonton and Saskatoon to transport victims from the base to regional medical centers.
Official Reactions and Ongoing Investigation
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the crisis on social media, describing it as a serious incident creating a major fire. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith echoed those sentiments, calling it a significant and tragic event affecting brave military personnel.
Defense Minister David McGuinty stated that while fatalities and injuries occurred, official figures would not be released immediately. This delay allows the Canadian Armed Forces time to complete next-of-kin notifications. General Jennie Carignan, chief of the defense staff for the Canadian Armed Forces, emphasized that member welfare and community safety remain the primary focus as federal, provincial, and local authorities coordinate the response.
