Gautam Gambhir Criticizes Guwahati Pitch After ODI Run-Fest

October 1, 2026 2 min read 0 comments

India head coach Gautam Gambhir expressed strong dissatisfaction with pitch conditions in Guwahati. This followed India’s successful 406-run chase against the West Indies on September 30, 2026. Gambhir argued that overly flat pitches severely harm the essential balance between bat and ball in international cricket.

Addressing post-match concerns, the Indian head coach emphasized that excessive run-scoring surfaces leave bowlers heavily disadvantaged. He noted that support staff are forced to evaluate performances based entirely on plan execution rather than standard bowling figures or traditional statistics.

Gambhir: “This Is Not Cricket, This Is Only Batting”

The second ODI at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium delivered an extraordinary run-fest. The West Indies posted a massive total of 405 for 7-their highest-ever ODI score-powered by centuries from John Campbell, Amir Jangoo, and Shai Hope. In response, India successfully overhauled the target in 43.3 overs, thanks to a century from Rohit Sharma and a historic double hundred by Shubman Gill.

While fans, broadcasters, and record books celebrated the high-scoring spectacle, Gambhir voiced serious apprehensions regarding the state of modern white-ball surfaces.

“Look, if I have to be absolutely honest, I feel I think there has to be a bit of more contest between bat and ball, because I think you talk about cricket – but this is not cricket, this is only batting,” said Gautam Gambhir, Head Coach of India.

Gambhir highlighted the psychological and professional impact such pitches have on emerging players entering the international stage.

“Because imagine a young bowler bowling on this wicket, and the opposition getting 400 and then we go on to chase 400. Obviously, for the records it’s outstanding, for the crowd it’s outstanding, for the broadcaster it’s outstanding, but if you ask me as a genuine cricket fan and as a coach, because I have to have sympathy for the bowlers as well,” Gambhir added.

Fan Backlash and Broader Pitch Debates

Gambhir’s public critique echoed widespread frustration among cricket analysts and fans alike. Social media platforms erupted during and after the match, with critics labeling the Barsapara track a “graveyard for bowlers.” Commentator Boria Majumdar also pointed out the unfairness of reducing demanding international fixtures to matches where 400-run totals are effortlessly erased with overs to spare.

The debate has reignited questions regarding pitch preparation strategies across Indian domestic and international venues, particularly as teams fine-tune their squads and conditions ahead of major global tournaments.
