Rockstar Games has released sweeping details regarding Grand Theft Auto 6. The upcoming open-world title features a setting roughly twice the size of its predecessor. It is divided into six distinct geographic regions and includes an innovative interactive ride-share fast travel mechanic. Set within the fictional state of Leonida-Rockstar’s modern-day realization of Florida-the game expands heavily across both urban and rural environments. It is anchored by Vice City and supported by five major new territories.
According to official announcements and developer insights shared by Aaron Garbut, co-studio head at Rockstar North, the core design philosophy centers on extreme building density and environmental immersion. Rather than relying solely on raw square mileage, the development team has focused on creating a living ecosystem. This features over 700 fully enterable interiors, realistic vehicle physics, and a deeply interactive world map.
The Six Confirmed Regions of Leonida
The fictional state of Leonida spans at least five counties and is officially categorized into six unique regions. Each area is modeled after a real-world Florida counterpart and offers distinct gameplay styles and criminal enterprises:
- Vice City: The sun-soaked, neon-lit urban core of the game. It is estimated to be two to three times larger than Los Santos from Grand Theft Auto 5 and features iconic districts such as Ocean Beach, South Beach, Downtown, Little Cuba, La Perle, and Stockyard.
- Leonida Keys: A sprawling bridge-connected chain of tropical islands situated south of Vice City. Featuring turquoise waters and white sand beaches, this region serves as the starting point for protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.
- Grassrivers: Rockstar’s simulated take on the Florida Everglades. This swampy wetland environment introduces a brand-new vehicle class-airboats-allowing players to navigate shallow waterways, encounter wildlife like alligators and flamingos, and run illicit smuggling operations.
- Port Gellhorn: Described as Leonida’s “forgotten coast,” this region mimics Florida’s smaller, working-class coastal tourist towns and industrial port facilities. It features shut-down attractions, fading motels, and widespread dirt-bike and ATV subcultures.
- Ambrosia: The industrial and agricultural heartland of the state. It is defined by heavy manufacturing, sugar refineries like Allied Crystal, and outlaw motorcycle club factions controlling the rural backroads.
- Mount Kalaga National Park: The rugged northern wilderness bordering a neighboring state. Drawing inspiration from northern Florida and Providence Canyon, it offers dense forests, riverways, and off-road terrain tailored for hunting, fishing, kayaking, and off-road racing.

Interactive Ride-Share and Traversal Systems
To navigate a map of this scale efficiently, Grand Theft Auto 6 introduces an interactive ride-share fast travel option alongside traditional transportation methods. Players can utilize a wide array of vehicles featuring fully simulated first-person interiors, working speedometers, and operational mirrors. Meanwhile, the ride-share mechanic provides a convenient way to traverse long distances across Leonida’s vast highways and backroads.
Water travel also plays a critically vital role in player progression. Because of the expansive coastline, the Leonida Keys, and the flooded plains of the Grassrivers, boats, jet skis, and specialized airboats are essential for exploration, uncovering hidden underwater loot, and completing maritime missions.
Unprecedented Building Density and Interactivity
A major quality-of-life leap for the franchise is the massive integration of accessible interiors. While past entries limited enterable spaces to specific mission hubs, Grand Theft Auto 6 features over 700 explorable buildings. Players can enter convenience stores, pawn shops, restaurants, strip clubs, motels, and multi-story commercial spaces equipped with functional elevators.
Environmental realism is further amplified by dynamic wildlife distributions across all six regions-including cougars, wild boars, sharks, and raccoons-as well as a police and civilian artificial intelligence system that responds more organically to player actions.
Launch Details
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch worldwide on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S. Pre-orders are currently open across digital storefronts and major physical retailers as anticipation builds for what is shaping up to be the most detailed open-world sandbox in gaming history.
