HBO’s anthology legal drama series War plunges audiences into the ruthless world of elite celebrity splits. It tracks a bitter marriage breakdown set primarily in present-day London. Created, written, and executive produced by George Kay, known for Hijack and Lupin, the eight-episode first season centers on technology billionaire Morgan Henderson and international film star Carla Duval. Their decade-long relationship fractures through aggressive legal maneuvers, tabloid scandals, and personal deception.

The Premise and High-Stakes Plot

The narrative kicks off when Morgan Henderson, played by Dominic West, receives the Pioneer of the Year Award at a prestigious ceremony in London. While basking in his public triumph, Morgan spots a stunning young woman named Flora Munroe, played by Rose Williams, in the audience. By the end of the night, the married tech entrepreneur has brought Flora to his bed, completely unaware that the encounter is far from accidental.

In Paris, Morgan’s wife Carla Duval, played by Sienna Miller, is promoting her latest film. Growing exhausted by the physical distance in their marriage and deeply suspicious of his loyalty, Carla orchestrates a calculated honey trap. She recruits Flora to become involved with Morgan and secretly document their encounter, hoping to obtain undeniable photographic evidence of his infidelity. Carla uses this explosive evidence to strengthen her financial position and break through an outdated prenuptial agreement.

Once Carla serves Morgan with divorce papers, the battle lines are drawn between two fiercely contrasting London law firms:

  • Taylor & Byrne: An upstart, contemporary firm characterized by glass walls and modern furnishings, run by married legal partners Nick Taylor (James McArdle) and Serena Byrne (Phoebe Fox). Initially, they object to Carla’s deceptive honey-trap scheme due to how a court might view the optics, but they ultimately utilize the evidence to secure leverage.
  • Cathcarts & Sons: A traditional, established institution featuring dark-wood interiors and oak paneling, represented by the formidable Beatrice “Queen Bea” Ubos (Nina Sosanya) and the razor-sharp, ruthless St. John Smallwood (Pip Torrens).

As the legal teams pursue financial advantages through aggressive tactics and personal manipulation, the dissolution of a decade-long marriage exposes deep vulnerabilities for both spouses. The hostilities even thrust Carla and Morgan’s 16-year-old son, Gabriel (Aran Murphy), directly into the blinding glare of public scrutiny and tabloid chaos.

Cast and Creative Team

Beyond the magnetic lead performances by Dominic West and Sienna Miller, War features a robust supporting ensemble. Archie Renaux stars as Johnny Warren, a driven young lawyer fleeing a career blunder in New York who attempts to make his mark at Taylor & Byrne. The wider cast includes Celia Imrie, Nick Mohammed, Emma Laird, Archie Panjabi, Adrian Scarborough, and many others.

The series is co-produced by New Pictures (a Banijay company) and Observatory Pictures, in association with Sky and HBO. Ben Taylor serves as the lead director, while Laurie Borg acts as series producer. Executive producers include Willow Grylls and Matt Sandford for New Pictures, alongside Susan Breen, Ben Taylor, Andrea Dewsbury, and Megan Spanjian for Sky.

Reception and Future Season 2 Plans

Debuting on October 1, 2026, on HBO and Max, War quickly captured viewer attention with its brisk pacing, juicy twists, and sharp dialogue, holding a strong Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have praised the show for balancing the grim realities of legal warfare with high-octane soap-opera entertainment.

Building on the success of the first outing, HBO has already greenlit Season 2 of the anthology series. The upcoming season will shift focus to an explosive defamation case and will feature a stellar new cast starring Marisa Tomei, Kelly Macdonald, David Harewood, and Richard Schiff as the legal drama continues to explore the high-stakes consequences of public conflict.
