Stephen Graham’s acting career nearly took a different path. The Liverpool-born actor secured his big-screen breakthrough in Guy Ritchie’s 2000 crime film Snatch by tagging along to support a friend at an audition, rather than pursuing a role himself.
Appearing on Sky One’s panel show There’s Something About Movies, Graham recalled the story to host Alan Carr. While waiting outside and drinking a cup of tea after his friend finished reading, filmmaker Guy Ritchie walked into the corridor and spotted him.
“Guy came out and said, ‘Are you next?’ I said, ‘No, I’m just come with my mate,’” Graham explained. Upon learning that Graham was also an actor, Ritchie convinced him to come inside and read for the production.
Overcoming Obstacles Through Improvisation
Facing the script inside the room presented a hurdle for Graham, who lives with dyslexia. Rather than letting it hinder his chances, he was honest with the director.
“I told Guy that I’d need time to familiarise myself with the scene, but instead, Guy says, ‘Can you improvise?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, come on,’” Graham recounted. Ritchie was impressed by his quick thinking. Following the improvisation, the director offered him a part, telling him, “Wow, great, okay, well you start on Monday.”
When Graham asked what he was supposed to tell his friend, Ritchie casually replied, “It’s not my f**king problem.”
Launching a Stellar Career Alongside Hollywood Icons
The chance encounter led to Graham playing Tommy, the business partner to Jason Statham’s character, in the film. The role introduced the young actor to stars including Brad Pitt and Benicio del Toro, putting him on the radar of casting directors worldwide.
Following his introduction in Snatch, Graham’s career flourished across British television and Hollywood productions. His credits include:
- Gangs of New York (2002) directed by Martin Scorsese
- This Is England (2006) as the complex and violent skinhead Combo
- Boardwalk Empire (2010-2014) playing Al Capone for HBO, with the pilot directed by Martin Scorsese
- Peaky Blinders
- Line of Duty
- Boiling Point (2021)
- Adolescence (2025), the acclaimed Netflix drama
Today, Stephen Graham is celebrated as a versatile actor. Yet, his journey from accompanying a friend to an impromptu audition remains a remarkable discovery story in modern British cinema.
