Dublin rock outfit Fontaines D.C. have released their fifth studio album, Dopamine Chamber, via XL Recordings. Following the success of their 2024 platinum-certified breakthrough record Romance, the band has pivoted toward an even darker, more synthetic soundscape. Examining digital alienation, identity crises, and modern anxiety, the new 11-track record merges electronic textures, orchestral arrangements, and stark cinematic elements with their trademark guitar-driven intensity.
Exploring Digital Alienation and Darker Soundscapes
Frontman Grian Chatten sought inspiration for the new project while traveling through Venice, Vienna, and Sicily. During the recording process in Palermo, Chatten constructed a makeshift vocal booth out of mattresses and pillows to capture raw, unfiltered vocal performances. Returning producer James Ford-known for his work with Arctic Monkeys, Depeche Mode, and Gorillaz-helped steer the group away from conventional guitar formulas into colder, stranger audio territory.
Chatten described the thematic and sonic shift of the project by contrasting it with their previous work. While discussing the record’s underlying concepts, Chatten noted that Romance was roughly 60% human, whereas Dopamine Chamber reverses that ratio, plumbing the depths of automation and social decay. “The album itself is a dopamine chamber,” Chatten explained. “You step inside and we test these different mind- or mood-altering pieces of music on you.”
Tracklist and Standout Collaborations
The album opens with the lead single “Marianne,” accompanied by a music video directed by Dave Meyers, renowned for his visuals with Kendrick Lamar and Travis Scott. The track utilizes suspended drums, dark guitars, and spiraling strings to evoke a tense, haunting atmosphere of escapism. Another focal point of the album is the sweeping duet “Where Is Gone?”, which features Spanish superstar Rosalía. Blending mid-century balladry and Morricone-style grandeur, the collaboration stands out as a spellbinding centerpiece of the record.
The full official tracklist for Dopamine Chamber includes:
- Six Shot Morning
- Marianne
- Mimesis
- Happy For You
- Demolition
- Tongue
- One Man
- Where Is Gone? (with ROSALÍA)
- You Miss Me
- Japan
- Intimate
Rejecting Creative Comfort
Having evolved from a celebrated post-punk revival act into one of the most unpredictable alternative bands in contemporary music, Fontaines D.C. continue to defy commercial expectations. Reflecting on the band’s rapid ascent and their conscious decision to eschew a safe sequel to Romance, Chatten emphasized the necessity of artistic reinvention. “To be creatively understood by too many people feels like flies settling all over your clothes and all over your face,” Chatten said. “Every now and again you have to f*****g shake them off, just to see who you are again.”
Dopamine Chamber is available now across digital streaming platforms, CD, cassette, standard black and blue vinyl variants, and a deluxe 45-rpm double-LP edition, as the band embarks on an extensive international tour spanning Europe, the UK, North America, and beyond.
