Vermont singer-songwriter Noah Kahan has achieved a historic career milestone, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with his fourth studio album, The Great Divide. Released via Mercury and Republic Records, the highly anticipated project earned 389,000 equivalent album units in the United States during the tracking week ending April 30, according to data from Luminate.

The stellar opening marks Kahan’s first-ever chart-topping album on the Billboard 200, eclipsing the peak of his 2022 breakthrough record, Stick Season, which previously topped out at No. 2 in 2024. Additionally, The Great Divide has secured the largest streaming week of any album released in 2026 and set the modern-era record for the largest vinyl sales week for a rock album since tracking began electronically in 1991.

Breaking Records Across Rock, Streaming, and Vinyl

The commercial impact of The Great Divide extends far beyond a standard chart debut. With 389,000 equivalent album units, the project delivered the biggest single week for a rock album since the Billboard 200 began measuring consumption by units in December 2014, surpassing Dave Matthews Band’s 2018 record.

Pure album sales contributed 175,000 copies to the total. This marks the largest sales week for a rock album in nearly seven years, since Tool’s Fear Inoculum arrived in 2019. Vinyl purchases alone accounted for 118,000 units, establishing a new modern-era milestone for rock music on the format. Meanwhile, streaming equivalent units (SEA) reached 212,000, translating to 215.37 million on-demand official streams.

Global Dominance and Back-Catalog Resurgence

The success of The Great Divide has been mirrored internationally. The album debuted at No. 1 across the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. In the United Kingdom, it marked the biggest first-week debut for an international artist in 2026.

Kahan’s previous catalog has also experienced a massive lift. His breakthrough record, Stick Season, surged back into the Billboard 200 top 10, climbing from No. 11 to No. 10 in its 179th charting week and earning 38,000 equivalent units. This rare double-charting success places two of Kahan’s bodies of work simultaneously in the upper tier of the charts.

Musical Collaboration and Expanded Editions

For his fourth record, Kahan reunited with previous collaborator Gabe Simon and teamed up with The National’s Aaron Dessner, whose extensive production work includes projects with Taylor Swift and Bon Iver. The resulting sound blends Kahan’s signature folk introspection with broader alternative instrumentation.

Capitalizing on immediate fan demand, Kahan released an expanded edition titled The Great Divide: The Last of the Bugs less than 24 hours after the album’s initial drop. This release added four bonus studio tracks, including the fan favorite “Staying Still.”

Upcoming Stadium Tour and Live Appearances

Following his chart domination, Kahan is set to expand his live footprint with a massive, sold-out North American stadium tour scheduled to kick off on June 11 in Orlando, Florida. Having already transacted roughly 1.5 million tickets for the trek, Kahan continues to cement his transition from a regional acoustic act into one of modern alternative music’s most successful headliners.
