Actor Joe Manganiello has revealed in his memoir, Bloodlines, that his team once suspected Tom Cruise may have influenced the casting decision that cost him the lead role in Prime Video’s hit series Reacher. While Manganiello acknowledges there is no concrete proof of interference, the unusual chain of events led his representatives to question whether behind-the-scenes dynamics factored into the final choice.
Released on October 13, 2026, Bloodlines details Manganiello’s near-miss with the iconic literary character created by author Lee Child. According to the book, the actor was heavily favored for the role in January 2020. He matched the imposing physical stature of Jack Reacher far more closely than previous onscreen adaptations.
How Joe Manganiello Nearly Landed the Role of Jack Reacher
Manganiello recalled meeting with Skydance Media executive Don Granger in early 2020 to discuss the television adaptation. According to the actor, Granger praised his physical alignment with the character. Granger told him he looked precisely like the descriptions in Lee Child’s novels and possessed the required effortless intelligence.
Support for Manganiello’s casting extended across key creative positions:
- Don Granger: Skydance executive who championed his physical and character fit.
- David Ellison: Founder of Skydance Media, who was reportedly thrilled with his potential involvement.
- Nick Santora: Showrunner who began actively shaping scripts and writing around Manganiello.
- Lee Child: The original author, who supported the casting choice.
Despite enthusiastic backing from producers and the author, the momentum stalled when the project reached then-Amazon Studios head Jen Salke. Manganiello writes that Salke was upset about being excluded from initial casting discussions. She felt that a group of primarily male producers had advanced the decision without her direct involvement. Following friction over the process, the role ultimately went to Alan Ritchson, who debuted in the title role when the series premiered in 2022.
Why Manganiello’s Team Suspected Tom Cruise
Following the sudden shift in the casting process, Manganiello’s representatives began speculating about external factors. Their sus**cions turned toward Tom Cruise, who previously portrayed Jack Reacher in the 2012 feature film and its 2016 sequel, Never Go Back.
The theory developed by Manganiello’s team involved a personal connection: Cruise had briefly dated Sofía Vergara in 2005, years before Vergara married Manganiello. The actor noted in his memoir that his team wondered if Cruise, whom they incorrectly believed held an executive producer stake in the property, might have intervened on account of Vergara.
“My team speculated that Tom could have potentially come in over the top and vetoed my being cast on account of Sofía,” Manganiello writes in Bloodlines.
Despite the speculation raised by his representatives, Manganiello emphasizes that the theory remains unproven. Cruise is not publicly credited as an executive producer on Prime Video’s Reacher series, and representatives for Cruise did not comment on the claims.
The Ongoing Legacy of the Reacher Franchise
While the role ultimately slipped away, the casting situation remains one of Hollywood’s most talked-about near-misses. Alan Ritchson has since cemented his place as the definitive television iteration of Jack Reacher, earning critical acclaim and massive viewership for Prime Video across multiple successful seasons.
For Manganiello, the incident joins a long list of high-profile projects that underwent major shifts during development, highlighting the unpredictable nature of casting decisions within major franchise television and film productions.
