Bestselling thriller icon Jack Reacher is returning to bookstore shelves. Lee Child and Andrew Child have announced that their upcoming novel, Chain Reaction, will be released on October 20, 2026. Published by Delacorte Press in the United States and Bantam Press in the United Kingdom, this 31st installment in the long-running series marks the return of a major fan-favorite character from Reacher’s past.
The book follows 2025’s Exit Strategy and continues the franchise’s steady release schedule as it nears four decades of publication. The novel spans approximately 384 to 416 pages and is currently available for pre-order.
General Susan Turner Returns in Chain Reaction
A highlight of Chain Reaction is the return of General Susan Turner. Turner, the former leader of the U.S. Army 110th Military Police Special Investigations Unit-a position Reacher once held-was previously featured in novels such as 61 Hours and Never Go Back. Cobie Smulders also portrayed Turner in the 2016 film adaptation opposite Tom Cruise.
In Chain Reaction, Turner has advanced within the military hierarchy and is now based at the Pentagon. After a member of her covert operations team is murdered, she finds she cannot trust anyone in her immediate circle. Needing an independent operative who can solve problems without leaving a trace, Turner tracks down the elusive Reacher.
Into the Remote Wilderness of Summertown, Colorado
According to the official synopsis, Turner locates Reacher, who then travels to Summertown, Colorado. This remote town is defined by its stark isolation and modern infrastructure.
The publisher describes the setting as follows:

The Jack Reacher Universe Today
The release of Chain Reaction arrives during an active period for the franchise. Alongside the annual novel releases, the Amazon Prime Video adaptation starring Alan Ritchson continues to reach new milestones. Season 4 of the series concluded in September, and production for Season 5-which will adapt the 20th novel, Make Me-is currently underway in Toronto.
Hardcover and audio editions of Chain Reaction will launch simultaneously on October 20, 2026, with Scott Brick returning to narrate the audiobook.
