Legendary actress Julie Andrews surprised fans and photographers on October 16 when she made a rare public appearance in the Hamptons, New York. The outing came just weeks after the beloved Oscar winner celebrated her 91st birthday on October 1, and roughly two months after she publicly confirmed that she had stepped away from on-screen acting roles.
According to photographs from the outing, the Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music star was spotted exiting a vehicle with the help of a companion. To stay warm and protected against the elements, Andrews wore a purple rain jacket paired with a white baseball cap and pink-tinted sunglasses.
Stepping Back From the Silver Screen
This rare sighting highlights the quiet, private lifestyle Andrews has embraced in recent years. Her last formal red-carpet appearance took place in March 2023, when she attended a celebration honoring close friend Carol Burnett’s 90th birthday.
In an August interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Andrews discussed her career shift and explained why her days in front of the camera have come to a natural end. “I think the absolute truth is that I think I’m really past all that now,” she said. “I’m not completely retired, but it’s a different kind of work that I do these days-writing books, and I do a lot of recording of podcasts and voiceovers. But truly, I don’t think I should be a part of it.”
Why Julie Andrews Turned Down ‘The Princess Diaries 3’
Andrews’ transition away from screen acting also answered questions regarding the third installment of The Princess Diaries. Fans hoped to see her reprise her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi alongside Anne Hathaway, but the actress decided to pass on the project.
Speaking to InStyle, Andrews elaborated on her choice: “The team asked me all last year if I would be keen to do it. It was very, very hard to say no, but I did because I thought I had a wonderful ride, and this one I felt would flourish very well and wouldn’t need granny going in there at my age.”
She shared similar thoughts with the TODAY show, noting that the sequel focuses on Princess Mia. “It’s too late for me to do it. I think the story has to continue with Princess Mia. It’s her story. It’s not really mine,” she explained.
Focusing on Family, Writing, and Voiceover Work
Though she no longer appears in live-action film roles, Andrews remains busy with creative projects. She voices the narrator Lady Whistledown in Netflix’s Bridgerton and has authored numerous children’s books with her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton.
Insiders report that she prefers spending time quietly at her home in Sag Harbor, tending to her garden and enjoying time with her family. Additionally, Disney is producing a biographical documentary about her life and career, slated for release in 2027.
Reflecting on the documentary, Andrews told TODAY, “I’m a little nervous, but I figure at this age of mine now, it’s probably the time to have agreed to do it.”
