An underground cable fault centered in Shoreditch triggered a major power outage across 32 London postcodes on Monday morning. The incident plunged central offices into darkness, blacked out railway station display boards, and cut off electricity to thousands of properties at approximately 10:30 a.m.
Utility provider UK Power Networks (UKPN) reported that the unexpected disruption affected thousands of homes and commercial buildings throughout east London and parts of the capital’s center. Office workers were left without Wi-Fi as monitors turned black, while retail shops operated under emergency lighting or temporary darkness.
Transport and Infrastructure Disruptions
The electrical failure caused immediate ripples across London’s transport network. At Liverpool Street station, one of the UK’s busiest hubs, customer information departure screens went completely blank, though train journeys themselves continued to run.
Further disruption hit the Great Northern line, where platform lighting at Ess*x Road station cut out entirely. Consequently, train operators were forced to temporarily bypass the stop. Passengers were advised to complete their journeys via Old Street or Highbury & Islington stations and to allow extra time for their commutes.
Additionally, Transport for London (TfL) confirmed that the power cut briefly impacted select traffic signals and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras within the affected zone, though wider bus and rail services maintained normal schedules.
Rapid Response and Power Restoration
Engineering teams from UK Power Networks utilized control room systems to remotely reroute electricity around the subterranean fault. Within the first hour of the incident, initial switching actions successfully restored power to 4,989 homes and businesses.
Supplies to remaining affected properties were progressively brought back online in stages by 11:08 a.m., with final grid and system checks concluding by 12:09 p.m. UKPN issued a formal apology for the inconvenience, praising field and control room staff for resolving the fault ahead of initial estimates.

Official Safety and Preparedness Guidance
Government and utility bodies reiterate standard safety protocols for residents experiencing sudden utility disruptions. Households are encouraged to maintain a battery- or wind-up torch, a stock of bottled water, and non-perishable food items that require no cooking.
Vulnerable residents or those reliant on home medical equipment-such as diabetes monitors or personal alarms-are advised to contact their device manufacturers to understand contingency operations and to register for their energy supplier’s Priority Services Register for extra support during future grid events.
