UK Power Networks reported that the electrical blackout affected multiple parts of the capital. These areas included North London, East London, the City, Islington, Hackney, and Westminster. Offices across central London were cast into shadow as lights, televisions, and Wi-Fi networks abruptly failed.

Impact on Transport and Commuters

The electricity failure created immediate challenges for commuters at Liverpool Street station. As the busiest railway hub in the United Kingdom, its passenger information display boards went completely blank. Great Northern train services were also heavily impacted. Platform lighting was knocked out at Ess*x Road station, forcing operators to bypass the stop entirely.

Transport for London (TfL) confirmed that the unexpected loss of power affected several traffic signals and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras within the affected zones. While bus and rail networks continued to operate, drivers were advised to navigate the affected corridors with extra caution.

Response and Restoration Efforts

Engineers from UK Power Networks mobilized quickly to isolate the underground fault and initiate remote restoration procedures. By utilizing network switching, operators successfully restored power to approximately 4,989 customers by midday. They targeted full resolution between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m.

“We’re sorry for any disruption this may have caused. We didn’t know in advance there would be a power cut, but now that we know, our teams will do everything they can to get your power back quickly,” said a spokesperson for UK Power Networks.

Technical teams were dispatched directly to local substations to inspect grid configurations. They manually rerouted electricity supplies where remote switching was unfeasible. Businesses and residents located within the affected postcodes were advised to monitor official network updates for ongoing repair timelines.

Affected Postcodes

UK Power Networks identified 32 specific postal districts impacted by the electrical disruption. The affected zones include:

  • E1 5, E1 6, E1 7
  • E2 0, E2 8, E2 9
