Hundreds of mourners gathered at the Sacred Heart Church in Waterford, Ireland, on Monday to bid a final farewell to Philip English, his wife Kim, and their young sons Callum, 12, and Jayden, nine. The family of four tragically lost their lives following a suspected arson attack on their home in the Birchwood estate earlier in the week.

The solemn funeral Mass honored the four family members before their burial at Kilbarry Cemetery. Bishop of Waterford and Lismore Alphonsus Cullinan presided over the service, while parish priest Fr Gerry Chestnutt delivered a deeply moving homily reflecting on the unprecedented tragedy that has shaken the local community.

Inside the church, four coffins-including two white and two light brown-stood side by side. A poignant photograph of the family, alongside four white candles, was displayed near the altar. Earlier, players from Johnville Football Club, where 12-year-old Callum played, formed an emotional guard of honor as the coffins arrived at the church grounds.

The deadly blaze broke out shortly after 5:00 AM on a Tuesday, engulfing the family home. While the parents and two of their sons tragically perished, two other children in the household-a 14-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy-survived the fire and remained in critical condition at Children’s Health Ireland in Crumlin, Dublin, under the watchful care of medical staff and local gardaí.

Community Grief and Ongoing Investigation

The tragedy has left Waterford in profound shock. Residents previously gathered in large numbers for candlelit vigils, releasing balloons and leaving floral tributes outside the charred remains of the Birchwood estate property. Local leaders and family members have voiced immense sorrow, describing the victims as innocent lives taken far too soon.

Law enforcement has moved swiftly regarding the criminal aspect of the case. Two individuals-identified as Cian Stacey, 21, and Jessica Dalton, 31-appeared at a special sitting of Clonmel District Court facing charges connected to the incident, including criminal damage and assault causing serious harm. Both were remanded in custody as gardaí continue their extensive investigation into the fire.

Tributes to a Devoted Family

Heartbreaking tributes have poured in from extended family members honoring the victims. Kim’s sister, Charlene Companjen, remembered her as a fiercely devoted mother who brought light to everyone around her. Nine-year-old Jayden, described as a brave “heart warrior,” had undergone heart surgery just two weeks prior to the tragedy. Meanwhile, Callum was celebrated by teammates and friends as a bright, carefree boy whose number five shirt will be permanently retired by Johnville FC.

As the community of Waterford begins the long process of healing, extended family and local authorities continue to rally around the surviving children, offering support and prayers during an unimaginably difficult time.
