Luton Council Installs New EV Chargers at Five Housing Sites

Luton Council has successfully installed electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities across five council-owned housing locations in partnership with chargepoint operator Believ. The initiative marks a significant step forward in making sustainable vehicle ownership practical for local residents who lack private driveways or off-street parking.

New Charging Locations Across Luton

The newly installed fast chargepoints are now operational at five specific residential sites throughout the town. According to local reports, the exact locations include:

  • Vadis Close
  • The Moakes
  • The Crossways
  • The Green
  • Bailey Street

This rollout represents the first time Luton Council has deployed EV infrastructure dedicated to supporting residents in council housing. While tailored to help social housing tenants make the sustainable transition, the chargepoints are fully open to the broader public, though specific parking restrictions apply at The Green, Vadis Close, The Moakes, and Bailey Street.

Supporting Sustainable Transport Goals

Local leaders have emphasized that tackling the infrastructure gap is vital for wider adoption of eco-friendly transportation, especially for households that cannot install home wallboxes.

Councillor Adrees Latif, Luton Council’s portfolio holder for Sustainable Development and Highways, noted the importance of the project:

Access to convenient EV charging is an important part of supporting residents who want to make the switch to an electric vehicle, but who may not have their own driveway or off-street parking. These new chargepoints are the first we have installed specifically to support residents living in council housing, helping to make EV charging more accessible in locations where it is needed.

Guy Bartlett, chief executive of Believ, echoed these sentiments regarding the expansion of local green networks:

By expanding the EV charging network in Luton, we’re helping more residents make the switch to electric vehicles. We’re pleased to continue working with Luton Council to provide reliable and convenient charging infrastructure, supporting the council’s wider sustainability ambitions and helping to reduce road transport emissions across the community.

Funding and Future Expansion Plans

The infrastructure project was fully funded by Believ, which also holds responsibility for the ongoing operation and maintenance of the equipment. Drivers looking to use the network can access detailed pricing, operational guidelines, and service information directly through Believ’s official digital channels.

Looking ahead, Luton Council has confirmed plans to introduce further chargepoints at four of the five initial sites, alongside additional network expansions across the broader municipal area. The local authority continues to review procurement opportunities and partnerships to enhance public charging accessibility for all residents without private off-street parking options.
