Mark Ruffalo has strongly hinted that Bruce Banner and Peter Parker could share more screen time and future stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following their explosive confrontation in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. While their recent big-screen encounter involved a brutal clash, comments from the actors suggest a true partnership may be on the horizon.
In the official featurette titled “Friends and Foes,” released alongside the digital version of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Ruffalo reflected on his return as the iconic green Goliath. He noted that their initial cinematic meeting served primarily as a setup for what lies ahead:
The idea of Hulk and Spider-Man finally meeting up… It’s iconic and legendary in the comics. And I think the way we do it is really a teaser for what’s to come with these two characters.
Looking Past the Conflict in Brand New Day
During Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner initially crossed paths as science allies before external forces intervened. In a pivotal sequence at the Department of Damage Control in New York, Jean Grey hijacked Banner by removing his inhibitor. This forced a transformation into the Savage Hulk and sparked a devastating battle that leveled the facility and injured multiple civilians.
The conflict concluded with a shaken Banner left questioning his actions, ultimately landing him in a psychiatric ward. Meanwhile, post-credits sequences have set the stage for much larger narrative arcs, including Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom collecting Hulk from an underground military facility ahead of Avengers: Doomsday.
Despite kicking off their relationship with violence, co-star Tom Holland expressed immense excitement over finally sharing significant scenes with Ruffalo:
I’ve always had a real soft spot for Mark. I was really excited to get the chance to work with him, especially because I love the character. And then of course, finding a way for Spider-Man to fight the Hulk is such an awesome opportunity.
Comic Book History and Potential Future Projects
In Marvel Comics, Spider-Man and the Hulk share a rich history featuring numerous alliances and occasional brawls, dating back to their first encounter in Amazing Spider-Man #14. Transitioning this dynamic into a full-fledged team-up within the MCU offers fresh storytelling potential as the franchise moves through the Multiverse Saga.
With both heroes tied into upcoming events involving Doctor Doom, fans have increasingly theorized about a cooperative escape or resistance effort in upcoming installments like Avengers: Secret Wars. As Marvel continues expanding its interconnected universe, Ruffalo’s comments point toward a much more collaborative future for the iconic duo.
