Hollywood veteran Michael Douglas revealed an unexpected piece of history from the early days of his relationship with Catherine Zeta-Jones. He shared that the late NBA legend Kobe Bryant was a frequent visitor to the actress’s Los Angeles home in the late 1990s.
In his memoir, One Helluva Ride, the 82-year-old actor details how he and Zeta-Jones attempted to maintain a romance across opposite coasts. They met at the Deauville American Film Festival in France in 1998. While Douglas was based in New York, Zeta-Jones lived in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, situated directly below the residence of a young Kobe Bryant.
Excuses Involving a Missing Dog
According to Douglas, the Los Angeles Lakers star quickly took notice of his new neighbor and frequently stopped by her property. At the time, Bryant was in his early twenties and had not yet met his future wife, Vanessa Laine, whom he married in 2001.
Douglas joked about the basketball player’s persistent visits in his memoir, writing, “Apparently Kobe kept finding excuses to stop by Catherine’s house. I’m not sure how many times he ‘lost his dog,’ but it was a lot!”
Despite the geographic distance and the unexpected neighborhood drop-ins, Douglas and Zeta-Jones maintained regular contact through daily phone calls. Meanwhile, she balanced a busy filming schedule that included projects like Entrapment and High Fidelity. The couple announced their engagement on New Year’s Eve in 1999 and married in November 2000 at New York City’s Plaza Hotel.
Zeta-Jones’s Previous Recollections of Bryant
Douglas’s account aligns closely with memories that Zeta-Jones shared publicly following Bryant’s tragic death in a helicopter crash in January 2020. The crash also claimed the life of his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and seven others.
Following the accident, the actress posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram detailing how they first crossed paths. She explained that their acquaintance began on the day Bryant moved into the neighborhood when his dog repeatedly wandered into her garden.
“His basketball court was my view,” Zeta-Jones wrote at the time. “I watched his talent and dedication, yet how could I have known that he was to become what he became.”
Memoir Revelations and Milestones
One Helluva Ride provides a deeper look into Douglas’s decades-long career and personal life. This includes anecdotes about his bachelorhood following his 1995 separation from his first wife, Diandra Luker, and his enduring marriage to Zeta-Jones. Despite weathering challenges, including a brief separation in 2013, Douglas and Zeta-Jones recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
