Micron Shares Surge as Options Traders Bet on AI Demand

September 30, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

Semiconductor manufacturer Micron Technology Inc. saw a significant surge in trading activity. Options market participants positioned themselves for bullish momentum ahead of the company’s quarterly financial results. The earnings report, scheduled to be released after the market closes on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026, serves as a critical test for the sustainability of artificial intelligence infrastructure spending.

Market-makers have priced in a potential 7% stock movement following the earnings release. This expected swing sits just below the memory-chip maker’s historical four-quarter average movement of 8%. The anticipated report follows a period of recovery for Micron shares. The stock had previously experienced a summer downturn driven by broader market concerns regarding corporate artificial intelligence spending and hedge fund adjustments.

Options Market Strongly Favors Call Contracts

Trading activity in the options market heavily favored call contracts. This trend reflected optimism among short-term traders. Data compiled from Cboe LiveVol and SpotGamma indicated that approximately 61,000 call contracts were purchased on Tuesday, compared to 37,000 put contracts. Call options accounted for 75% of the total $1.6 billion in traded premium.

According to open interest data from Barchart, the put-to-call ratio for Micron touched near a one-year low as the market closed. This contraction in the ratio highlights a noticeable reduction in demand for downside protection relative to aggressive bullish bets.

Market analysts note that dealer positioning ahead of this announcement differs notably from previous quarters. Jason DeLorenzo, owner and founder of options market-structure analytics platform Volland, described the current setup as a more universally bullish dealer alignment. According to DeLorenzo, market-makers hold negative hedges that may need to be unwound. This dynamic could push the stock toward the price targets priced in by the options straddle.

Support Levels and Downside Risks

Despite the prevailing optimism, heavy open interest in specific put option strikes could act as a stabilization mechanism if the company’s financial figures fall short of consensus expectations. Data from options-trading analytics website Opti-View highlighted significant open interest in put options between the 980 and 1000 strike prices, including roughly 34,000 open puts concentrated at the 1,000 strike.

Analysts point out that owners of these protective put positions would likely take profits if Micron disappoints. This action could provide a structural floor for the stock price. Conversely, popular call interest has clustered around higher levels, with particular attention directed toward the 1,150 and 1,200 strike prices.

Broader macroeconomic factors continue to present potential headwinds for the semiconductor sector. Rapidly selling bond prices and surging interest rates have raised concerns across equity markets. While major stock indexes have largely absorbed macroeconomic pressures, market participants remain watchful of how shifting monetary conditions might impact high-valuation technology and AI-related equities.
