A 22-year-old man from New Jersey is recovering in intensive care after suffering serious injuries in a cliff-jumping accident on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. Jacob Fleig, a resident of Berlin Township in Camden County, made the nearly 100-foot jump into the sea on October 5 while vacationing with his fiancée, Olivia, just a day after proposing to her.
Emergency Response and Medical Treatment
The incident occurred at the popular tourist destination Fiordo di Furore, a site known for its dramatic cliffside views and narrow sea shoreline. According to reports from the Italian news agency ANSA and local outlet RaiNews, Fleig struck the water in an unfavorable position, sustaining a severe cut to his back and multiple internal traumas.
Medical responders initially transported Fleig to a local hospital in Castiglione di Ravello before transferring him via emergency helicopter to a larger facility in Salerno. Doctors initially classified his condition as serious but stable. His brother, Jimmy Dorner, noted that Fleig has undergone numerous lifesaving procedures and surgeries while remaining in the intensive care unit.
Family Fundraising and Plans for Return
As Fleig continues his recovery overseas, his family has focused on organizing his medical repatriation to the United States. Dorner launched an online fundraising campaign to cover the substantial costs associated with specialized medical transport and ongoing surgical care back home.
The campaign quickly gained momentum, surpassing $47,000 toward its $50,000 goal by Saturday afternoon. Friends and family members have shared tributes online, describing Fleig as a vibrant, charismatic individual deeply loved by his community.
Safety Concerns on the Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast features numerous rugged cliffs and scenic vistas that frequently attract tourists seeking adventure. However, local authorities and rescue services routinely warn visitors about the extreme hazards of unauthorized cliff diving and swimming from elevated coastal roadways. Italian law enforcement and regional agencies continue to look into the circumstances surrounding the October 5 incident as part of standard protocol for severe tourist injuries.
The family remains focused on stabilization efforts in Italy, hoping to secure safe air transport for Fleig to continue his rehabilitation and subsequent surgeries closer to his New Jersey home.
