A fresh, high-stakes television adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic 1883 novel Treasure Island is heading to screens. MGM+ has announced that the six-part series will premiere in the United States on Sunday, October 11, bringing a dark, character-driven reinvention of the legendary pirate adventure to viewers.

Created by Robert Murphy and produced by Mark Hedges, the new series reimagines the timeless story with an all-star cast. David Oyelowo stars as the cunning pirate Long John Silver. He acts alongside Hayley Atwell as Bess Hawkins, Tom Sweet as Jim Hawkins, Jack Huston as Aaron Graham, and Tomer Capone as Billy Bones.

What Is the Plot of the New Series?

Set in 1788, the narrative transports audiences across storm-battered Cornwall, treacherous seas, and a mysterious jungle island soaked in secrets. The plot begins when teenager Jim Hawkins and his quick-thinking mother, Bess Hawkins, acquire a legendary map tied to the buried treasure of Captain Flint.

Bess is preparing to marry to protect her family’s interests when the map falls into their hands. This discovery pulls the mother-son duo into a deadly race for gold. Navigating shifting loyalties and mounting peril, they find themselves caught between two powerful figures:

  • Long John Silver: A ruthless, charming, and resourceful survivor.
  • Aaron Graham: A debonair revolutionary spy intending to use the treasure to challenge colonial power.

The series charts Jim Hawkins’ transformation from a sheltered boy into an emboldened young pirate. He confronts a complex world where resilience, identity, and survival are tested.
