October 19, 2026 2 min read 0 comments

Communities across Interior Alaska are preparing for severe winter weather. The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Fairbanks has expanded winter storm watches for multiple regions. The incoming storm system brings heavy snowfall and strong winds, creating hazardous conditions for residents and motorists.

According to the latest forecasts from the National Weather Service, the eastern Alaska Range will bear the brunt of the storm. From Monday, October 19, through Wednesday, October 21, areas above 2,500 feet could receive 18 to 30 inches of snow. Even higher totals are possible above pass levels.

Forecast Details and Elevation Impacts

The intensity of the storm will vary by elevation and location across the region:

  • Above 2,500 feet (Eastern Alaska Range): 18 to 30 inches of snow accumulation, with higher amounts possible near passes.
  • Lower Elevations: 12 to 18 inches of snow accumulation expected.
  • Wind Activity: Gusts could reach up to 40 mph, contributing to blowing and drifting snow.

Hazardous Travel and Safety Warnings

Forecasters have issued severe warnings regarding regional mobility. Travel conditions through the eastern Alaska Range could quickly deteriorate, becoming very difficult to impossible during the height of the storm.

Strong wind gusts up to 40 mph will cause blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility on local roadways. The NWS advises motorists to avoid non-essential travel in the affected zones until conditions improve and maintenance crews clear the routes.

Broader Impact Across Interior Alaska

Local authorities and emergency management agencies are urging residents to secure outdoor property, check emergency vehicle kits, and monitor continuous updates from the NWS Fairbanks office. This early-season system highlights the rapid transition into harsh winter conditions across the Last Frontier, requiring heightened preparedness from all communities in the path of the storm.
