A woman died Wednesday morning after a vehicle struck her at a busy intersection in Center City Philadelphia, according to local police and eyewitness reports.
The fatal crash occurred just after 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of 19th and Lombard streets. Authorities stated that the victim was attempting to cross westbound on Lombard Street when an oncoming vehicle hit her.
First responders rushed to the scene and worked quickly to free the woman, who was trapped underneath the vehicle. Despite life-saving efforts by emergency medical personnel, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Eyewitness Account and Potential Factors
Darrien Wiley, an eyewitness taking a break nearby, recalled hearing the loud impact of the collision and immediately dialing 911.
According to Wiley, a SEPTA bus parked near the intersection may have obstructed the pedestrian’s line of sight, potentially blocking her view of incoming traffic as she stepped into the crosswalk.
Local law enforcement officials have launched an investigation into the crash. Investigators are reviewing the sequence of events, examining visibility factors at the intersection, and speaking with additional witnesses to determine the exact cause.
