Merseyside Police arrested eight individuals following a violent street brawl involving groups armed with bats and poles on the St Helens Linkway on Thursday evening. Officers who were en route to an unrelated emergency came upon the large-scale disturbance, intervened, and took multiple suspects into custody.
The sudden outbreak of street violence prompted local authorities to enact emergency powers. These include enhanced stop-and-search zones and a targeted dispersal order across parts of the borough to curb any potential retaliatory disorder.
Details of the Arrests and Suspects
According to Merseyside Police, the suspects detained following Thursday’s altercation span a range of age groups:
- Six males (aged 15 to 19): Arrested on suspicion of affray and possessing offensive weapons in a public place.
- Two men (aged 18 and 22): Detained on suspicion of affray.
All eight suspects were taken into police custody for questioning as detectives continue to piece together the sequence of events that led to the armed confrontation on the roadway.
Emergency Powers and Dispersal Zone Implemented
To maintain public safety and restore order across the community, senior police commanders authorized a temporary Section 60 stop-and-search order alongside a strict dispersal zone.
The designated dispersal area covers the territory bordered by:
- East Lancashire Road
- Abbey Road
- Hard Lane
- Rainford
The dispersal order remains active until 14:00 BST on Sunday. This grants officers the legal authority to order suspected disruptors to leave the specified boundaries for up to 48 hours. Individuals who refuse to comply with the directive face immediate arrest. Additionally, the enhanced stop-and-search powers permitted officers to inspect individuals for concealed weapons up until Saturday afternoon.
Police Inspector Issues Stark Warning
Local Policing Inspector Paul Varley addressed the community following the public concern generated by the violent incident on the St Helens Linkway.
Such violence will not be tolerated, and as such we have arrested eight men in connection with last night’s incident. Both orders have been put in place as an added measure to provide us with the powers needed to stop and search or disperse people in the area.
Inspector Varley emphasized that the heavy police presence is designed to protect everyday residents rather than disrupt daily community life.
“Such action isn’t about bothering anyone going about their daily business or preventing people from meeting with friends,” Varley stated. “It’s simply about taking action to reduce violence and make sure that everyone can feel safe where they live.”
