San Antonio Law Enforcement Hosts Annual Neighbors Together

Law enforcement agencies across the Bexar County area hosted annual Neighbors Together events on October 6, 2026, to foster stronger ties between local communities and first responders. This annual initiative, widely recognized as National Night Out, takes place every year on the first Tuesday of October. The primary objective of the gathering is to build trust and strengthen working relationships between residents and public safety officers.

These local gatherings marked the first Neighbors Together event for San Antonio Police Chief Jesse Salame since taking leadership of the department. Speaking to local media following his appointment, Salame emphasized that active outreach remains a foundational element of his leadership approach.

“I need to be sure that I’m out there just engaging with the officers, engaging with the community,” Salame said. “And letting them know that we’re there for them. And when we need to be accountable for something, we’re absolutely gonna be accountable for that.”

Communities Across Bexar County Participate in National Night Out

Neighborhoods, school districts, and municipalities throughout the San Antonio metropolitan area organized localized gatherings, block parties, and safety demonstrations. The History and Impact of National Night Out

National Night Out was originally established to enhance awareness of crime and drug prevention, generate support for local anticrime programs, and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. Over the decades, the event has expanded from a simple porch-sitting campaign into comprehensive community-police block parties, festivals, and safety fairs across all 50 states.

Public safety officials consistently credit these annual face-to-face interactions with improving communication channels. By establishing a positive rapport during routine community events, law enforcement agencies and residents build foundational trust that proves vital during times of crisis or community emergency.
