San Francisco Underground Vault Fire Triggers Shelter Order

An underground electrical equipment fire erupted in San Francisco’s Financial District on Thursday morning, Oct. 1, 2026. This emergency forced officials to issue shelter-in-place and evacuation orders across several downtown blocks.

Smoke began pouring from underground structures around 6 a.m. This led to the immediate closure of California and Front streets, causing severe gridlock during the morning commute. Safety advisories were lifted shortly after 11 a.m.

The San Francisco Fire Department responded after receiving reports of heavy smoke coming from infrastructure access points near major commercial intersections. According to fire officials, at least four concrete vaults housing critical transformers and electrical components experienced physical eruptions during the incident.

Emergency Response and Financial District Closures

The incident centered around the block surrounded by Front, California, Sacramento, and Davis streets. Captain Jonathan Baxter, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Fire Department, noted that approximately 70 firefighters deployed to the scene to battle the hidden electrical blaze alongside utility crews.

Authorities rapidly expanded safety perimeters as smoke continued to billow from manholes and access points. The Department of Emergency Management issued an expanded shelter-in-place order that eventually encompassed the 100 to 300 blocks of both California Street and Front Street.

Commuters faced severe delays because the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency halted the California Street cable car line. The agency deployed bus shuttles around the cordoned zone to assist travelers.

Cause of the Fire and Utility Investigation

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) crews coordinated closely with first responders under a unified command structure. PG&E spokesperson Megan McFarland confirmed later in the morning that utility investigators traced the root cause of the incident to an issue related to an underground cable.

To safely extinguish the flames, PG&E technicians intentionally shut down additional power systems in the immediate vicinity. While the localized outages affected nearby office buildings and commercial properties, emergency officials confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of the vault eruptions.

All Clear Given as Advisories Lifted

Firefighters and utility inspectors successfully stabilized the infrastructure by mid-morning. Just after 11 a.m., the San Francisco Police Department announced via social media that safety advisories were lifted and road closures along California Street between Sansome and Davis streets were rescinded.

Although emergency crews cleared the scene by noon, city officials warned that residual traffic delays would persist through the afternoon. Utility crews remained on site to conduct comprehensive inspections of the affected subterranean utility boxes to prevent future equipment malfunctions.
