A team of evolutionary biologists made a remarkable scientific discovery after converting an $80 motel room in Nags Head, North Carolina, into a makeshift research laboratory. While examining water samples collected nearby, the researchers identified two brand-new species of single-celled photosynthetic microbes.
Led by Dr. Julia Van Etten, the field team managed to set up research equipment inside the budget motel room to analyze their fresh samples immediately. The team’s findings, officially published in the Journal of Phycology, reveal two previously unknown species of Paulinella, a genus of microscopic amoebae known for their ability to photosynthesize.
From Roadside Water to an Improvised Lab
The discovery began with simple roadside water collection in coastal North Carolina. Rather than waiting to transport the delicate organisms back to a permanent university facility, the scientists set up scientific equipment inside their rented room to examine the samples while fresh.
The temporary laboratory allowed the researchers to isolate and study the tiny organisms right away, verifying that the microscopic amoebae were distinct from all previously documented species.
Expanding the Known Tree of Life
The discovery expands the world’s known count of photosynthetic Paulinella species from four to six. These tiny organisms are extremely valuable to evolutionary biologists studying how cells acquire new biological abilities.
Paulinella is one of the few known lineages where photosynthesis evolved in a separate, more recent evolutionary event compared to plants and algae. Studying their genomes provides scientists with crucial clues about how complex organisms adapt and integrate new organelles over time.

The unorthodox setup surprised even fellow scientists who joined the project. Dr. Andrew Willoughby, a plant genome biologist who visited the temporary motel laboratory, praised the team’s professional rigor despite the unusual setting.
“Oh my god, these people are legit,” Willoughby remarked, recalling his reaction to seeing the operational scientific setup inside the budget room.
The newly identified species will now undergo further genetic analysis, offering deeper insights into cellular evolution and microscopic life in local aquatic environments.
