British television actor and EastEnders star Shane Richie received a six-month driving ban on September 23. He pleaded guilty to a speeding violation along Reigate Hill in Reigate, Surrey. Guildford Magistrates’ Court ordered the 62-year-old performer to pay a fine and legal surcharges following the incident.
Speed cameras recorded Richie driving his Ford at 35 mph in a 30 mph zone on March 15 at 9:16 a.m. His case was processed privately under the Single Justice Procedure after he submitted a written guilty plea to the court.
Court Penalties and Fines
The court fined the Tadworth resident £500 for the speeding offense. He also received £120 in prosecution costs and a £200 victim surcharge, bringing his total financial penalty to £820. Magistrate Sheila Hewitt presided over the case at Guildford Magistrates’ Court.
In a written statement submitted to the magistrate, the actor pointed to persistent paparazzi coverage as a contributing factor. Richie explained that tabloid photographers frequently followed him due to his ongoing public divorce.
Paparazzi Pressures Cited in Statement
Richie described being tailed daily from his workplace in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, where he films up to six days a week. The photographers followed him to his home in Surrey, and tracked him into local supermarkets and areas around Reigate.
“It’s no secret now that I’m going through a very public divorce and for the last several months the British press have suspected this and have been constantly baiting me and almost always looking for a reaction from me to sell their newspapers,” Richie wrote in his statement to the court.
Richie offered an apology for the traffic violation. He clarified that the aggressive press attention was not an excuse for his actions. “This is not an excuse for going five miles over the limit, but just a reason why I may have sped up on that particular road,” he added.
Separate Legal Proceedings
In addition to the speeding conviction, Richie faces a separate, contested allegation of drink-driving. This stems from an incident at a petrol station in Church Langley Way, Harlow, Ess*x, on July 29.
Prosecutors allege that Richie drove a white Hyundai while over the legal alcohol limit. He produced a breath sample reading of 65 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal threshold in England and Wales stands at 35 micrograms.
Richie denies the drink-driving allegation and appeared at Colchester Magistrates’ Court earlier in September to enter his plea. His trial for this separate charge is scheduled for November 17, 2027, at Colchester Magistrates’ Court.
