Snow Forecast to Hit 11 Scottish Counties Next Week

October 7, 2026 2 min read 0 comments

Weather forecasting models indicate that the first snow of the season could fall across 11 Scottish counties on October 16 and October 17. This system will bring up to 5cm of accumulation over higher ground. Data from the Global Forecast System (GFS) weather model reveals that these upcoming wintry showers will primarily target central and northern regions of Scotland.

Meteorological predictions show that the snow will be strictly restricted to elevated areas, reaching the highest mountain peaks in the affected regions. While lower levels will likely experience cold rain or brisk winds, high-altitude locations are poised to see the first proper dusting of the autumn season.

Which Scottish Counties Are Affected?

According to the latest GFS model data, 11 distinct counties across Scotland are facing potential snowfall during the mid-October cold snap. The impacted areas span the northern and central highlands:

  • Sutherland
  • Ross-shire and Cromartyshire
  • Inverness-shire
  • Nairnshire
  • Banffshire
  • Aberdeenshire
  • Angus
  • Perthshire
  • Argyllshire
  • Dunbarton
  • Stirlingshire

Broader Weather Context and El Nino Outlook

Long-range forecasters have been closely monitoring atmospheric conditions heading into the colder months. Experts note that this year’s El Nino cycle, projected to be among the strongest in living memory, could influence the polar vortex as the season progresses. A weakened polar vortex can occasionally trigger Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW). This phenomenon is historically associated with intense cold spells and heavy snow events, such as the 2018 “Beast from the East.”

“Although SSW doesn’t always result in a major blast of snow, a cold snap follows more often than not,” notes meteorological guidance regarding seasonal shifts.

However, meteorologists emphasize that the mid-October system is a standard early-season weather front rather than a precursor to an extreme polar vortex disruption. The upcoming snow is localized strictly to Scottish peaks, serving as a routine reminder of the transition into late autumn and winter conditions across the United Kingdom.
