Actor Sue Devaney has addressed her upcoming departure from the ITV soap opera Coronation Street. Her character, Debbie Webster, is navigating a progressing vascular dementia storyline scheduled to conclude in 2027. Devaney first appeared on the show as a teenager in 1984 and returned full-time in 2019. She revealed that she had originally hoped to finish her career on the cobbles.
Producer Kate Brooks pitched the terminal illness narrative, which will bring Debbie’s dramatic chapter on the soap to a close. Despite the emotional weight of the storyline, Devaney admitted she has not made definitive career plans following her exit from Weatherfield.
Reflecting on her time on the show, Devaney shared, “When I came I was 16. Coming back to Corrie, I thought: ‘This is nice. I could end my career on Corrie, and I’d be very happy.’” However, Debbie’s young-onset vascular dementia diagnosis means the actress will not get that exact retirement ending. The condition continues to progress rapidly and will eventually claim the character’s life.
Debbie Webster’s Tumultuous Final Chapter
Debbie’s life on the soap has taken a series of devastating turns over the past year. Her romance with Ronnie Bailey culminated in an agreement to marry. However, their wedding day was shattered by the fatal Corriedale car pile-up caused by Carl Webster.
Carl switched their places in the vehicle. He attempted to exploit Debbie’s emerging dementia symptoms to evade responsibility. Although Debbie knew Carl was responsible, she felt deep guilt over giving him up as a baby. Initially believing he was her brother before realizing she was his mother, this guilt pushed her to take the blame and protect him, resulting in a prison sentence.

Before Debbie’s ultimate exit, the actress humorously suggested a crossover trip to the rival Yorkshire soap Emmerdale. Given that region’s history of deadly car crashes and dramatic mishaps, staying in Weatherfield might ultimately prove safer for Debbie.
