Early Life and Education
Sverrir Páll Guðnason was born on September 12, 1978, in Lund, Sweden, to Icelandic parents. During his early childhood, his family returned to Iceland, where he grew up in Reykjavík. He became fluent in both Icelandic and Swedish.
In 1990, his family relocated to Tyresö, Sweden, after his father accepted a position as a professor at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm. Guðnason developed an interest in acting during his youth and later pursued drama training and stage work in Sweden.
Acting Career
Guðnason made his television debut in the mid-1990s, playing Jonas in the youth miniseries Sexton (1996-1997). Over the following decade, he performed regularly on stage, including productions at the Gothenburg City Theatre and the Stockholm City Theatre.
In 2009, he played the lead role of Henry in the Swedish-Danish comedy-drama film Original. His performance earned him the Best Actor award at the Shanghai International Film Festival. That same year, he joined the television crime series Wallander, portraying junior police officer Pontus Höijer in the show’s second season.
Borg vs McEnroe and The Girl in the Spider’s Web
In 2016, Guðnason was cast as Swedish tennis player Björn Borg in Janus Metz Pedersen’s 2017 biographical drama Borg vs McEnroe, starring alongside Shia LaBeouf. The role brought him wider international attention and a Guldbagge Award nomination for Best Actor.
In 2018, Guðnason played journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the thriller The Girl in the Spider’s Web, directed by Fede Álvarez and co-starring Claire Foy.
