ABC’s hit crime procedural The Rookie is expanding its roster for its upcoming ninth season, adding fan-favorite actress and director Troian Bellisario as a brand-new rookie officer. The major casting announcement was officially revealed during the series panel at New York Comic Con, giving eager fans a glimpse into what to expect when the show returns to the network’s primetime schedule.

Troian Bellisario Joins Season 9 as Stephanie Monroe

Best known for her starring role in Pretty Little Liars, Bellisario will recur in The Rookie Season 9 as Stephanie “Stevie” Monroe. Character descriptions released during the event reveal that Stevie is a thirty-something single mother navigating a difficult divorce. She decides to reinvent her life by stepping onto a new career path as a police officer on the streets of Los Angeles.

Alexi Hawley, series creator, executive producer, and showrunner, announced the casting alongside several other additions for the upcoming television block. Bellisario’s character will be paired directly with veteran training officer John Nolan, played by series lead Nathan Fillion.

From Director to On-Screen Rookie

This casting marks an exciting return to Mid-Wilshire for Bellisario, who previously directed the Season 8 episode “The Thinker.” During her time behind the camera, Bellisario worked closely with Hawley and the core cast. This established a strong collaborative relationship before she officially joined the ensemble as an actor.

Nathan Fillion praised the casting choice during promotional events, noting that Bellisario quickly became one of his absolute favorite rookies to train throughout the show’s run.

What Else to Expect in The Rookie Season 9

Season 9 of The Rookie premieres on Wednesday, Jan. 6, in a new 9 PM time slot. This strategic schedule places it as a direct lead-in to the franchise spinoff, The Rookie: North, headlined by Jay Ellis, creating a two-hour law enforcement block on Wednesday nights for ABC.

Key Season 9 Additions and Guest Stars

  • Troian Bellisario as Stevie Monroe: A single mother undergoing a major life transition who becomes John Nolan’s newest rookie.
  • Dulé Hill as Lt. Hughes: A distracted 30-year veteran of the force trying to manage his role as Watch Commander while facing personal turmoil.
  • Molly Kunz as Quinn: A determined small-town woman pursuing a career as an emergency medical technician in Los Angeles.

The season premiere begins with a two-part event addressing the dramatic cliffhanger from the Season 8 finale, which left squad members Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) kidnapped and in grave danger. As Nolan and the team mount a high-stakes rescue operation, viewers can expect the gripping street-level action, emotional beats, and dynamic character interactions that define the ABC procedural.
