Ukrainian military units carried out a large-scale aerial operation on September 27, 2026, dropping nearly four tonnes of emergency supplies to civilians trapped in the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky in Kherson Oblast. Together, these units utilized drones to drop food, water, and medicine across 100 targeted distribution sites on the Russian-controlled left bank of the Dnipro River.
Oleshky has faced critical supply shortages since May 2026, when expanded minefields and heavy drone coverage cut off remaining ground access. With regular humanitarian routes blocked and evacuation efforts stalled, the town’s remaining population-estimated by regional authorities to be around 2,000 residents, including nearly 50 children-has faced extreme malnutrition, with some forced to consume garden weeds.
Regional officials stated that Russian forces have actively attempted to disrupt the aerial deliveries by shooting down supply drones. , authorities accused occupying troops of confiscating or reselling humanitarian parcels, and detaining civilians who manage to retrieve the dropped packages.
The recent drop builds on sporadic drone-supply efforts that have operated since March 2026. However, international and local monitors warn that the humanitarian situation remains dire, as occupying authorities continue to block safe access for international organizations like the United Nations to assist front-line communities.
