Authorities in Chile are investigating the tragic death of a woman whose body was pulled from the water near the Caleta Portales pier in Valparaiso as a potential homicide. Initial Discovery at Caleta Portales Pier
The incident came to light on Friday, October 16, 2026. The Chilean Maritime Authority received notice of a person floating in the sea near the Valparaiso pier at approximately 1:45 p.m.
Local fishermen braved difficult sea conditions to rescue the woman, who was approximately 35 years old. Emergency personnel met them onshore and attempted to stabilize and resuscitate her. They then transported her via ambulance to Carlos van Buren Hospital, where medical staff officially confirmed her death.
Prosecutor Details Signs of Trauma
Prosecutor German Klug, speaking on behalf of the Organized Crime and Homicide Team (ECOH), stated that preliminary medical examinations revealed multiple wounds to the victim’s chest and neck. These injury patterns led authorities to dismiss early rumors of a sea lion attack.
“Preliminary findings revealed multiple wounds to her chest and neck that investigators believe may have been inflicted by another person before she entered the sea,” Prosecutor German Klug noted regarding the ongoing inquiry.
Investigators are actively examining whether a sharp instrument was used in the assault. At this stage of the investigation, authorities have not yet identified any suspected assailant. The victim’s formal identification continues alongside forensic evaluations.
