Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen have firmly defended their eldest son, Kai, against accusations of nepotism. The scrutiny followed the 16-year-old’s recent youth scholarship signing at Old Trafford and a high-profile modeling and sponsorship campaign with Puma.
The couple addressed the public backlash in their new Disney+ docuseries, The Real Rooneys, which premiered following a reported £10 million bidding war. The series documents Kai’s journey as he works his way up through the Manchester United academy-where his father famously scored a record 253 goals-into the Under-18 squad alongside Jacey Carrick, son of former United midfielder Michael Carrick.
Addressing critics who claim Kai’s progress is entirely down to his famous family name, Coleen pushed back during an interview. “I think Kai is a prime example of not being a nepo baby,” she said. “He has always wanted to be a footballer, but he has intelligence, he’s an intelligent lad.” She noted that Kai recently completed his GCSEs with top marks and has even taught himself to speak Spanish fluently.
Wayne Rooney echoed his wife’s sentiments, stressing that he holds his son to strict, independent standards. “I’ve actually been into the club and said ‘If he isn’t doing well then I don’t want them to be here because of me,'” Wayne explained. “It’s not fair on them. You don’t want your kids to be in that position where they feel they’re not good enough.”
Wayne added that he is most proud of Kai’s inner drive and true desire to play. “He has earned that right to go and play for Man United and getting that contract,” he said.
Alongside his football progression, the Disney+ series highlights Kai expanding his career off the pitch, including a major advertising photoshoot with Puma. Despite the commercial opportunities and public interest, the Rooney family maintains that Kai’s achievements are the direct result of his own dedication and hard work.
