Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy Wild Horse Nine officially opened the BFI London Film Festival on Friday, October 9, drawing stars John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell, and Steve Buscemi to the Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank. Written and directed by the British-born Irish filmmaker, the Searchlight Pictures feature pairs Malkovich and Rockwell as longtime CIA agents navigating a politically charged mission set against the backdrop of 1973 Chile and Easter Island.
The high-profile premiere brought out the film’s creative team, including McDonagh-who was spotted sharing a moment with partner Phoebe Waller-Bridge-alongside his leading men. Malkovich, sporting a beanie on the red carpet, and Rockwell kept the UK audience entertained during a post-screening stage introduction. Rockwell drew laughter when describing what attracted him to the project: “Martin’s annoyingly handsome but very talented,” before adding that the script ultimately won him over.
Plot, Setting, and Characters
In Wild Horse Nine, Malkovich plays Chris, a jaded and aging spy who is a shadow of his former self, while Rockwell plays Lee, his younger partner tasked with keeping his mentor in check. Sent by bureau chief MJ-played by Steve Buscemi-the two CIA operatives travel from Santiago to Easter Island to lie low shortly before Chile’s 1973 coup.
Set against the surreal backdrop of the island’s monumental Moai statues, the narrative transforms a scenic sabbatical into a tense study of paranoia. As the agents grapple with their murky shared past, they cross paths with two rebellious Chilean student activists, Monica and Alicia, portrayed by Mariana Di Girólamo and Ailín Salas. This encounter threatens to unravel both their assignment and their fragile friendship.
Buscemi noted in red-carpet interviews that his preparation for the bureaucratic station chief relied heavily on McDonagh’s dialogue rather than real-world intelligence contacts. “When it comes right down to it, [MJ] is a boss and he has bosses and he’s under a lot of pressure,” Buscemi told reporters.
The Creative Team and Early Reception
The film expands on themes familiar to fans of McDonagh’s previous work, such as In Bruges and The Banshees of Inisherin, blending razor-sharp black comedy with intense character-driven relationships. Alongside the primary trio, the supporting cast features Parker Posey as Lee’s stateside wife, Marge, alongside Tom Waits.
Malkovich’s performance has already generated significant awards buzz, following his best actor win of Venice’s Volpi Cup. Critics at the BFI London Film Festival noted that the film successfully balances its historical tensions with trademark absurdist humor.
Release Schedule
Following its festival circuit run and London premiere, Wild Horse Nine is scheduled to open theatrically in the United States and the United Kingdom on November 6 via Searchlight Pictures.
